Do I really need/want a bed cover?

This is a first. How does a cover drop the mpg? I would have figured it would help MPGs

It does help. Independent tests, GM testing, MotorTrend testing, among others. A lot? It depends on the truck and the cover. Anywhere from a little bit to a few percent.
"conventional wisdom" is repeating one small bit a while back that was more about tailgates than covers.

Interesting that they compare the thicker flat top of the modern tailgate to the last few inches of a tonneau cover, saying their tailgate design mimics the last part of the cover.

I was actually holding out for one with Line-X on the panels. Glad I didn’t. I don’t believe there’s any way the panels on this would scratch without actually doing damage to the panels. It seems to be very durable.

I believe TFL Truck did this test a couple of months ago and saw an increase in MPG as well.
