Ok.

So I was in another thread about the brakes (if you really care check post history) and that got me thinking about driving styles.

Thought this could make interesting discussion.

So I think of myself as a proactive driver....

I imagine most drivers feel that way so let me explain how I'm better than you ? (jk though I do think my style superior to yours... possibly... discuss below)

So by proactive... I mean

I am multiple car lengths behind a car in front of me on the road. I don't want to be anywhere near you.... nothing personal but the majority of people like to ride ass....

Stupid, dangerous, can't see anything, what is the point? I have an open mind... explain to me how riding someones ass is a plus benefit.

I mean...

I anticipate stops...

I watch as everyone around me accelerates towards a red light. Ok. It is a half mile away.... i get it... except...

It is a half mile away.

It is already red. I get passed because people want to accelerate until they get to the absolute point they have to stop... then they hit their brakes. Why not slowndown more naturally..

I have an open mind. Please explain to me how this makes any sense.

I could go on but I want to hear from you. Why does everyone else suck so bad and how can they do better?
This doesn’t make you better than me, ? . I do this exact thing and people say I drive like a 70yr old man. I’m 40. Combine all of these TTPs with not driving a “car” because they are too low to the ground and don’t provide a good viewpoint. I have only owned Jeeps and trucks. Following distance = awareness. Speeding is asinine. On my 28mi commute, 80% is a three lane 50-55mph divided highway with stoplights about every 1-3mi. People will often weave in and out of traffic, easily driving 70-80mph. That overage might shave 6min off a 28mi trip, if they were actually going where I was going, but only if there were no lights and traffic moved consistently. Instead, I see them get about 1000yds ahead after they pass and they wind up alongside me again at one of the next lights. What did they accomplish here? Nothing, other than be bad citizens by driving like $h!t and putting others at risk on the road so they can shave a couple of minutes or just seconds off their drive….all while thinking they look cool.

Actually I never picked up the habit of slowly approaching the red light until my driving went from mere commuter to nearly constant for work when I was younger.

It didn't make any sense to me to hurry up and stop just to hurry up and get back to speed.... repeatedly doing that day after day, light after light started to feel insane....

So I started coasting into lights... Sometimes I watch a light turn red and by the time its green I'm already doing 35.

Why are you so excited to come to a complete stop? Wouldn't you prefer to keep moving?

to stop thinking for 20 second! I watch everything on the road, usually about 300-500ft in front of me!! Dont think that driving is not a job.. its more hazardess then my actual work

I like drive too fast. But sometimes too slow. I like to not pay attention and cut others off. Sometimes I tailgate cause like, it's fine who cares.

Other time I turn left in front of people but don't use my turn signal. I find other react well to that.

I like to merge onto the highway without easing into the flow and just sort of force myself into a spot I don't really fit in so others have to mash thier brakes.

If someone does any of these things to me I honk and flip them off and scream HEY FUCK YOU BUDDY! because I'm more important than they are.

I'm a really good driver and probably better than all of you.
Oh, you definitely live in Florida. Do you also drive slow in the left lane just for the fun of it? Or maybe drive the wrong way on a one way because you want to take the scenic route? I’ve definitely seen you around here! ?

I was prepared to defend my driving habits but like everything else in life nobody's really looking for advice. Sometimes I have to stop myself from complaining, because inevitably someone will have a solution for it I'm not trying to hear.

I like to coast to red lights. It's about not wanting to waste gas and/or brakes. It's just not efficient. Goes against being an engineer. If I'm on an on ramp to the freeway and need to hit 80 to keep up I will, but that's not the same thing. When you're driving on the highway and need to slow down, do you use the brakes or just let off the accelerator? Same philosophy applies in town.

I feel like a lot of people drive their emotions. If you are angry or in a bad mood, you're more likely to drive aggressively, speed, run a red light, etc. Just human nature. I watch people weave through traffic on the way home at 5 or 6 pm and just wonder what's the rush. Must have to pee?

Lead follow or get the fu©¢ outa the way. Most people think they own the highway. If you're getting on the hwy at less than hwy speed merging into traffic. I'll blow right past you finger up horn blaring. If I'm on the hwy and you want to get on it's called a merge lane for a reason. Learn how to merge a$$h0/e! Left lane passing lane, right lane driving lane. Go back to driving school. I'll flick my headlights at you if your doing the speed limit in the fast(passing lane). As my dad used to say "Pay awake stay attention" if you use your common sense which we all know isn't so nowadays. We could all get along on the road. In Nevada it's illegal to use the passing lane as the driving lane unless you're passing vehicles. Which they never enforce. Climbing down from the soapbox!

It's fun to go fast, especially in certain cars, but totally unnecessary to speed to a red light. A waste of gas and breaks. I saw about "proactive" driving earlier. The term you're looking for is "defensive" driving and it should be mandatory education for anyone with a license. It's more about just paying attention to everyone else, and communicating with them, turn signals and waves and whatnot. You just don't know what all those drivers have going on, their distractions. And it's so easy to forget these machines we drive can take our lives in a split second, so respect it for what it is, take it slow, and enjoy the ride. I've never been too hurt being 5 minutes late for something.
