I got a certificate for a locker or LSD (Eaton or Detroit) from a forum member last year and finally ready to redeem it. I have a Freedom Max Tow so already have an LSD in the back which has preformed very well when it kicks in. I do offroad throughout the Summer here in Colorado.

I'm torn between a locker or an LSD in the front. LSD is simple to throw in and forgot while the locker I would have to grind the diff cover to get the wire out. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) Locker is certainly stronger though at the end of the day. Want to hear your guys thoughts and question away if wanted

You're familiar with setting backlash and running a gear mesh pattern?

Running the wire for a selectable locker is a pretty easy part of the job. The wire goes through the axle housing, not the diff cover.

Locker vs limited slip as far as strength, not sure there is a difference,

I would never install a limited slip in the front. A selectable locker will give you better traction off road plus the ability to turn it off and only turn one of your front tires in 4wd. You don't really want both your front tires spinning when you're trying to turn on a snow covered road.

No Question…… Selectable Locker in the front…….
You want to retain ā€˜stock’ steering & driving ability in the front wheels. LSD’s can cause some ā€˜strange’ mannerisms when turning/driving - and as mentioned…in snow/slippery conditions.

Would not do a front locker, drove a Rubi in Moab with 37s and to turn the front with it E-locked required Charles Atlas arms; it was a rental so NO PSC system on the fronts.. Tangent: If I could find a Locker (mechanical) that would go into the Mojave Rear I would have it already.. Personal choice I don't like the E locker or Air locker for the Rear Drive.

Get the selectable locker. You turn it on when you need it, and turn it off when you don't want it. It isn't that hard to do, you push a button. Turn it off before you get the steering bound up on slickrock, and before you need to turn in snow. I've been going to Moab all the time for decades running this set up and it's no big deal. In fact, I'm headed there again tomorrow. There are also about a kajillion other Jeeps with a front selectable locker that are doing just fine.

Thanks guys, I spaced about driving on ice where the LSD could cause problems. (Though I typically use a AWD Volvo in storms. Have Toyo ATIII's and that thing is a beast.) I'll get a hold of Eaton and get a locker ordered.

I have the freedom max tow with the 4 high auto option. Hope would a locker affect the usage of that?

It wouldn't affect 4A as you have to manually engage the locker once 4WD is engaged. I probably wouldn't do that though and drop it into 4H instead if you wanted the locker.
