We just got back from a 1000+ mile trip to purchase a used travel trailer with our new Gladiator Diesel Rubicon. According to the manufacturer the trailer weighs about 4800lbs empty. We didn’t carry any liquids in the holding tanks and were lightly loaded. I’d guess No more than 5100-5200lbs. It’s 8.5 feet wide and about 8 feet tall, 22 feet long. Most of the time I drove a max of 65mph on flat ground, 55-60 on hills. Using the gauges in the Trail Pages I saw oil temperatures from around 215 to a max of 260 degrees observed on the section from Albuquerque to Flagstaff. Most of the time the temps were in the 225 to 235 range. My question is this: What is a max safe oil temp (continuous/peak) for the Eco Diesel while towing? The digital gauge shows no color zones to indicate this, i.e., green, yellow, red. Coolant temps were always good. I don’t think I ever saw anything over 230-235, and most of the time around 215-225. Oil pressures were always good with no significant change at higher oil temps.
Does anyone have any similar experiences I can compare to? BTW, the trailer towed like a dream, and I never ran out of power. From Amarillo to Albuquerque I got 13.6mpg (measured and calculated, not from the computer), and probably averaged around 12mph. Low was a little less than 11mpg.
