So….I was in Moab last week. We were on Pritchett toward the beginning. I caught my left rear on a rock I was going around. I didn’t hit it very hard, and I felt certainly not hard enough to damage anything. But…..shortly after that, it started making an awful grinding sound. Then it gave me a “service 4WD” message and then I couldn’t activate the lockers or disconnect the sway bar.

I put it in 2H and 4H and everything sounded normal. I put it back in 4L and got the awful grinding sound. I turned it off and re-started it. I put it in 4L and it started making the grinding noise again and gave me another “service 4WD” message and I couldn’t activate lockers or disconnect the sway bar.

I thought maybe I had messed up something in the transfer case, so I got it off the trail and parked it. I was able to drive it home today. When I got home, I put it in 4L and it sounds fine. No griding. Tomorrow I am going to try the lockers and sway bar disconnect.

My brother in law said that it sounded similar to the Hill Descent Control mode. I know I didn’t hit the button.

Has anyone dealt with something similar?

Almost sounds like something was slipping on the 4L engagement with the transfer case.

If me, I would be doing a transfer case fluid drain and inspection and the same with both Front/Rear diffs with the covers off doing an inspection looking for chunks and chipped gears.
