My point is that there are just too many variables including the truck's suspension itself to pronounce any particular setup "safe" without some pretty specific individual scrutiny, and if you plan on counting on the "built in sway control," I hope you've got really good insurance. I've towed on a bare ball, with and without a sway-control bar, and the sway control hitches I mentioned. If you set your trailer up properly with about 13% of the total trailer weight on the tongue, sway control is just cheap insurance. Anyone who tows a trailer over 1500 lbs without trailer brakes is just irresponsible.
QFT.

@OP: There's a difference between what you can do and what you can do safely. When you're on a public roadway hauling a trailer and potentially endangering others.... err on the side of safety- always.

My "opinion" is to recommend WDH, and brake controller. Overall I'm just some A## hole on the internet. Now in last 4 days I've towed a heavy utility trailer around 500 miles and dropped off a 60 in zero turn mower at a shop for a friend this morning. "Interesting events in this trip... on I-state a jackass towing a gooseneck trailer weaving and cutting off many drivers, then cut over from far left lane across 2 other lanes in front of me then to have a sheet of OSB fly out, the front bumper and winch on my Gladiator ended up taking the hit at about 65 mph. What does this have to do with WDH and trailer brakes, raining and a lot of traffic so hitting the brakes would have put my vehicle/trailer (no trailer brakes) in to a skid to probably hit other vehicles and cause a crash. FYI: the jackass seen the sheet fly out cut back into center lane zoom up the back to then jumped off at the exit. Now a note on Gladiator brakes they can "stop it with a trailer tested today with said mower on trailer, wet pavement and the stop was quick but this trailer has low COG, 16ft long max including the tongue and over 15% tongue weight.

I have a Anderson WDH on my Scamp and brake controller in my JT and LJ. With that you can apply trailer brakes to slow or reduce trailer swaying to a point. Let alone in "panic" braking situations needing to stop now.

Cheap compared with the cost of your vehicle, T.T. and safely.
