Hey all. New here. My JTR I notice sputters a little mainly in 3rd and 4th around 1800 rpm. Anyone else experience this?

Thanks

No, I have not noticed anything. I will see if I notice anything on mine... How many miles do you have ? Any 4 wheeling ? Lots of dust ? I would check the air cleaner, and suspect maybe some dust got on the mass air meter sensor ?

It has 300 miles on it now. Haven’t had it in the woods yet. Haven’t had it a week yet.

It’s just weird. Always at the same rpm I notice it. In 3-4th. I think it may just need to be broken in?

Hi Gary, I had the same issue with my 6 speed JTR for the first couple thousand miles, noticed the hesitation mostly between 1st-3rd @ 1800 rpms as you said.
Ultimately it resolved after the first 2kmi but my theory comes from some experience with open source tuning modified cars. The ECU/ECM- brains of the car, does a certain amount of "learning" beyond it's base tune. It makes slight adjustments to timing, air:fuel ratios as it adapts to both environment and your driving characteristics.

This forum has good info on proper break in procedure for the 3.6, won't get into that, but check it out when you have a chance.

Long term I think the hesitation will smooth out as it has with mine, however the power curve is far from linear, still very sluggish until about 2.7k rpm then wakes up. Net net, these motors seem to like more rpm so don't be afraid to shift a little later ;)

Good luck!

I did have to get used to the electronic gas pedal and the super light engine internals. Yes, I rev it more between shifts and there is no need to give it gas between shifts... it only causes the gladiator to lurch forward...

Now with about 2.5K miles, the engine seems to really have woken up. It pulls strong.

I've noticed some, what I'll call "jerkyness" when driving in town at speeds between 30 and 45. If I shift to the next higher gear, the engine bogs down, if I downshift, the RPS are too high & engine is screaming. *ANY* push on the gas pedal will make it lunge ahead; any reduction on gas makes it lurch as it slows down. There doesn't seem to be an ideal gear for in town driving @ these speeds.

My JT is still fairly new (~1,400 miles), so I'm hoping this is a break-in / truck learning my driving style issue that will improve as times goes on...

Thanks for the reply’s fellas. I’ve noticed it starting to get better as I just hit 1300 miles.

Looking for information about the hesitation I have experienced after about 500mi and found this thread.

My bone stock 6spd Sport S has a bit of hesitation, or a blip in fuel delivery when in any gear below 1800 rpms. I have found 2000rpm to be the sweet spot for cruise control.

Thanks.

Rob

I think this has a lot to do with the variable cam timing. You can really notice this if you slowly run through 1st gear and how the engine responds to acceleration. It's basically dead flat feeling until you break that 1500-1800 band and then it takes off. I believe this is just characteristic of the 3.6L. I have 5k on mine today and it still does this but you get used to it.

I have noticed it’s getting better for me with the more the Jeep breaks in. I too think it may just be something to tolerate with the 3.6.

I had 20k miles on my JL 6 speed, but it took a good 1k-2k miles to even out and learn it’s quirks. After that if it’s still doing it, take it in.

You will also notice that with the electric gas pedal, big Jeep rims, and big tires that the RPMs come down more gradually than a normal sports car during a shift. This allows you to shift between gears with the gas pedal not depressed. If you press the gas pedal between shifts the Gladiator lurches forward.

This is the way I like driving the manual.
1. Get the clutch out fast in 1st gear, then, gas it good until 3500 rpm, then, put the clutch in, and take your foot off the gas or just barely feather it, change gears, then, let the clutch out with no gas. or barely feathering it - this will insure that the Gladiator does not lurch forward, then, gas it again to accelerate and repeat for the next gear.

I think this slower decrease of RPMs during the shift is a characteristic that will help us keep the stock clutch for a long, long time.

Hey I know this is an old thread, but curious if anyone has figured out this issues. 6speed manual Rubicon on 37s, stock gears. Noticed it hesitates and bucks in low RPMs as well for quite some time now. I have almost 30k on mine.
