Clean then - clear nail polish, or as mentioned earlier by @Hootbro, any clear epoxy resin will work.

will the nail polish not expand/contract at a different rate and possibly exacerbate the problem?

I use it in emergencies like epoxy and then clean it up with a razor. There is always a female in my house with nail polish handy. I personally own 3 vehicles and 2 of them have cracked windscreens with the newest, nicest of the bunch with the worst damage. I will get the glass treated with a chip resistant film after it is replaced. In this part of the Lone Stone State it's a cost effective investment.

I've never thought about the expansion/contraction because it's nothing but hot here most of the time and windscreens here are all chipped, cracked, and broken. Chips here are as common as sunshine.

I don’t know where you are, but I’m jealous. I spent 7 years in Vegas and miss it every day (in PNW now).
