I was just reading a thread about a gentleman who was planning to use his JScan to change his gear ratio without actually changing his gears. It got me wondering what impact it would have on transmission shifting and more importantly transmission life. Is the transmission able to pick/learn the proper shift points without reprogramming the vehicle with the correct gear ratio?

I don't think there are any "smart" components in the transmission.
The PCM controls the shift points, and I have always been a bit skeptical about how much of what it does is hard coded and how much it can actually "learn" from our driving habits.
I have a hunch that the only learning taking place is some math changes based on a new tire size or a new gear size.
I wouldn't tinker with lying to it about which gears I'm running.
Smarter people than me set them up to shift based on criteria they thought was important.
Throttle, RPM's, grades, etc.

That sounds like a bad idea. Accounting for tire size is one thing, but gear ratios are a way larger multitude of complication to account for.

I have seen other threads here in the past of people that actually got the physical gear ratios changed and failed to update the PCM settings for it and ran into transmission problems. Doing the reverse of this would seem problematic to me.

This might actually be a good application for AI. The current versions no but maybe in the future.
