For my dual band icom 5100 I used the Diamond K400SNMO lip mount for antenna mounted to the hood on the driver's side and the Larsen NMO2/70B antenna. Works great. Got a very good SWR reading.

Please understand that an antenna ground plane has NOTHING to do with your electrical system or battery. Aluminum or steel does not matter. Please Google "antenna ground plane purpose" and read up on this.

Cliff notes: a large metal surface (like a hood) is used to reflect signal and improve reception.

I plan to use something like that. Works well on my Ram. Now I just need to figure out where to mount the Yaesu dual band FT7900r.

Look here for my universal mount for HF/VHF/UHF on the rear bed wall starting at post #77. The ground plane is adequate for HF and all the HF antennas I tested matched fine and radiated like crazy: https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/forum/threads/ham-radio-install.32973/page-6#post-722209

And here for my two hood mounted NMO VHF/UHF mounts starting at post #90: I think this is a better solution than the mounts that stick out the side of the vehicle below the cowl. https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/forum/threads/mounting-gmrs-antenna.37301/page-6

I used the K400SNMO mount on the hood and routed the antenna cable through the cowl around the door seal.

I did not use the thin metal strip between the set screws and hood. Instead, I let the screws dig through the paint on the inside of the hood to make a solid ground plane connection.

I simply got a mount for the left rear door glass and mounted a 1/4 wave 'whip' there. Works fine for all repeaters in the area and NO ground plane needed. The radio is under the driver seat and the mike has all the visual things (though pretty small and a little hard to see...)
