Slightly off the original topic but it is reasonably straight forward to import a vehicle from Canada into the US. I've done it twice, once with an Infiniti and once with a BMW. In both cases, I was required to obtain a letter from the US head office confirming that the Canadian vehicle met all the federal (and California) emissions and safety standards and that there was no outstanding recalls. The BMW letter even confirmed that the warranty would be honored in the US. Showed up at the border, presented the letter, got a nice official stamp showing the vehicle had been imported and off I went. In my case the BWM was actually built in the US so I didn't even have to pay import duties. The Infiniti cost us a couple grand in duties as it was built in Japan. Both vehicles were registered and insured (StateFarm) in Washington without issue and had warranty/service work done by local dealers. The Infiniti was happily taken as a trade-in for one of our first Jeeps and I saw it being driven locally shortly after that so it was registered at least twice here.
If you don't "import" the vehicle and just drive it across the border, I'm guessing the DMV won't touch it....
