Ion 171 wheels out of round

I recently purchased Ion 171 17X9 one-piece aluminum wheels. I really liked the style. I had Discount put new Goodyear Wrangler Ultraterrain 35X12.50 R17 tires on them. They couldn't balance them and so tried them on the stock tires, and they were fine. They showed me on the balancing machine that two of them were out of round or out of plane. I test drove them and have a bounce in the rear between 65-75 mph that I didn't have with the stock wheels and Falkens. So, I've ordered four Method 705s, which Discount said they have never had a problem with.

Since I ordered the Ion wheels nearly a year ago when I ordered the gladiator that took five months to get here, my warranty options are slim, and I'm not sure I want Ion wheels anyway. Just a warning.

And by the way, Discount was great about doing the experiment, and while I paid a bit more for the wheels than I might have through the forum (I do get the Vet discount), I bought it from them anyway. They rotated them so the bad Ion wheel was on the front, and that was worse. The spare on an Ion wheel I'll use as the spare.

Just to let people know what my experience with Ion wheels have been.

Yeah, that's what Discount said, but Ion should sell wheels that are true. If it's not too expensive, I might do that to the one still on the ground, then sell them.

Unfortunately, it may not be Ion's fault. Shipping companies don't exactly use kid gloves and toss loads around all the time. An unshod wheel doesn't have much protection in a cardboard box.

@Geoarch, I'm sorry to hear you had a problem with the wheels you bought a year ago. I'm glad to hear your Discount Tire store took the time and effort to show you what was going on with the wheel and why.

If you get a chance please post up a photo when you get your new Method 705 wheels. I run a set of the Method MR409 wheels with bead grip technology on my RZR in 15x7 with 32x10R-15 tires and love them for being able to air down when wheeling.

Yeah, I've been dealing with the Albuquerque store on Paseo del Norte for a decade. Some of the guys working there have been with Discount for decades. They are a very busy store, but always have time for the customer. That's worth a lot in my book.

True, but two of five? The boxes didn't look damaged.

That is so good to hear, it makes my day. I have been purchasing tires for 40 years (long before working here) and always had good experiences. There were many people I met over the years that I enjoyed going in to see. Like any business things can go wrong, but the few times I had something happen they always took care of the issue.
