Hey, is anyone going to King of Hammers? I’m going for the first time and don’t really know what to expect.
Also, I’m wanting to bring my two dogs. I’m more wanting to chill and check things out than anything serious.
What tips do you have? I’m looking forward to the vibe and see cool sh*t.

Expect cold and wind. Expect hot and extreme UV rays. Expect dust. Expect way too many people in way too small of a space. Expect to have a really good time.
First timers should always go with others who have been there done that. They will know the vantage points from which to see the most excitement.
Have a great time, and seriously, layers upon layers will be your friend out there.
Gonna suck for me because I’ll be moving from 29 Palms to Visalia tomorrow and have to drive right through there in that insane traffic.

You will want to be prepared for potentially cool weather. And a lot of dust. You're likely to be surprised by the number of people and vehicles there. Hammertown has food vendors but I suggest you pack food and drinks like you would for any outing. I've linked a map that shows spectator locations: https://www.ultra4racing.com/2022-koh-spectator-hammertown-maps
While driving around the desert, be aware, there are vehicles traveling in ALL directions. A lot of folks will also have dogs there : ) Have fun!

My son just told me that Sublime and Pennywise are supposed to be playing out there.
That’s gonna be a damn zoo!

I actually have to go to Johnson valley for some work related to the mcagcc in 29 palms, but I don't get there until the 12th, so I'm missing the fun...

Agreed sir. Being a San Diegan by birth but an Arkansan by the grace of God I fully understand what you’re saying.
Left Arkansas in 83 courtesy of the Corps. Got stationed in 29 Palms in August of 93. Was like 108* at 230am when we came through the front gate. Having just spent the previous three years at Quantico VA, when my wife opened the front door at daylight and started weeping I was like oh hell.
Once we got acclimated to the 120 degrees with 30 mph winds at 5% humidity it became our little bowl of desert paradise. Got weened off of ticks, chiggers, mosquitoes, and humidity and decided to make this place home.
Having been here since 93 there may be some misty eyes watching 29 slowly fading away in the rear view mirror.
Having ties to Visalia for about ten years now I’m very familiar with their London fog and their 108* with 94% humidity. I hate it, but we have a three year old granddaughter up there and I retired for the second time two days ago.
Going to try and convince everyone to move to either Utah, Arizona, or Nevada. I want desert out my front door and forest out my back door. I do like the fact that the entrance to Sequoia National Park is about 30 minutes from our front door. Lots of Sierra Nevada’s to be explored.
Sorry to hijack the thread.

If you’ve got time to play while you’re here, just east of town is the Old Dale mining district. Hundreds of mines and mile after mile of awesome desert trails. Or right here close to town is the Gold Park mining district, ten minutes from the front gate of the base.
What brings you here? Just retired Thursday. Been here for quite a while but it’s time to move on.

Hi-jack away. Northern Nevada no state income tax. Nice summers pretty good winters. As far as I can tell really no bugs whatsoever. Can't complain at all myself. Love it up here.

Had good friends up in Gardnerville and Winnemucca. A little too cold at either of those. Something no further north on the map than say Cedar City.

Cool, thanks for the info!

I've been working at the base on and off since around 2005. We have some aircraft tracking equipment spread out through the range. Now that they are expanding the base in the Johnson Valley area we have to add some more sensors.

Never really had much time to do anything other than work unfortunately.. I really want to bring my Mojave out there, I'm hoping to drive out for KOH next year..

Congrats on your retirement BTW!
