So, did a week traveling to the black hills/badlands)devil's tower. Mostly scenic drives, mostly pavement. Few gravel, some less maintained then others. No serious off roading this trip. Was super comfortable with wife and two dogs. Zero issues with that many hours or miles.

Jeep was a stock 80th anniversary with cold weather, tow package, safety group, and selec track.

Don't hesitate to take on highway. Steering was a non issue, as well as noise. Even on iron mountain highway, always felt great.

Must haves:
Tonneau cover for luggage. With all seats full, needed to keep stuff out of weather.

Lots of gas lol.

My longest trip so far was about 5,000 miles over about a week, nearly all interstate & federal highways. No issues at all.
Sounds like you had a fun trip. Did you get to see Mt. Rushmore?

Yes, it was cool, but I enjoyed devil's tower more.

If you have time devil's tower is a must. If you enjoy waterfalls, take the spearfish canyon byway. Bridal falls is right off the road. Another waterfall is a short walk from a lodge/restaurant (only one you will pass). A third is a mile trip up a dirt road right by the same lodge.

Badlands is great, wall drug is over rated (personal opinion). If in deadwood for history, pay attention not everything is as it seems. Saloon #10 (where Hickok was shot) isn't the real one. The wild bill bar is actually on the correct spot, with the original bar below. You can go in there. I like history, so was worth the $10.

Mt. Moriah cemetery is beautiful, and the graves of old west figures was fun to see. Just bring cash, as it is $2 a person.

For a free scenic drive take iron mountain road from south to north. It is amazing. If you chooyto go to Custer state park, needles highway is also fantastic.

Cosmos Mystery Area is worth a stop, if you like seeing things run uphill.
And there are several caves in and around Rapid City.
The Crazy Horse Memorial is worth seeing, too.

Made a trip to same area, without any sort of off-road vehicle, for Thanksgiving last year. Can definitely second the recommendations of others in the thread.

Go see:
  • Devil's Tower
  • Crazy Horse
  • Mt. Rushmore
  • Custer National Park

I think the kids enjoyed Custer most of all the locations we visited. There were donkeys in the road providing a "car wash" in one area. It was a lot of fun!
