If the wax (or mold release) were to work, I think that I would first melt it and then scrape away with a razorblade.Mulled it over some more...
I'm worried the wax will interfere with the paint.
I went and studied that part a little closer too.
The white parts are very shallow, so I see what you mean.
I wonder if I could paint the part orange, then redo the white easier?
if you used a rubber (not foam or fluffy) roller to apply some sort of masking over the orange, you could spray white to fill in the etching.
Some thing like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Jasco-1-Qt-Liquid-Mask-and-Peel-QJMS300/315144796
applied with something like this:

The etchings might be too detailed though.
I got pretty excited when I saw the test piece.
I don't care so much about that button but the red switch really bothers me :p
For masking the red first, getting something thick enough to not flow into the white but to still allow for the detail will be the trick.
I am tempted to see it acetone will attack the plastic (white) ... with minimal impact to the red paint
I am right there with you about the button vs the locker switch panel - the button was just an easier and lower risk thing to start with.
