For my wife’s car. We have a 1upusa and I consider it the best out there. She’s uses it but there are times we both need to transport and/or just leave in the car so need another. Problem is, it’s very heavy for her to remove/install and folding up and down can be difficult. She’s actually pretty strong and can install it on her own but I want something a little easier in her.
We dislike mounting bikes in the top tube; probably just spoiled from the 1upusa.

I have a Gladiator but prefer a hitch mount so will just use our 1upusa.. Is there something out there comparable in quality and effectiveness but much lighter?

What type/weight are your bikes?
I read what your saying about the hanging type but if you want something light weight it might be your best bet.
I have a Thule Apex XT 4. Its 35lbs. I bought the 4 bike version, just for 2 bikes, so I can keep lots of space between bikes.
I can set it up and securly hang a couple bikes, in a couple minutes.
It has a hand tightened wedge that compresses on the inside walls of the hitch receiver giving a very tight, non-rattling connection. This has a built in key lock.
No tools needed.
The Zip straps hold the bikes firmly in place and prevent swinging.
It also has a buit-in cable bike lock system, adequate to keep most honest people, honest.

Edit:
oh, and despite what some reviews might say, I can (carefully, gently) tilt it, with 2 bikes on it, and be able to open the tailgate.

I have a Kuat NV 2.0 with the integrated bike stand. It is a great bike rack, but definitely not light. I checked their site this AM. It is 56lbs...

I have the Kuat Transfer. Less expensive than the smancy models and works flawlessly. We even use it on the rear of our smittybilt scout trailer when camping off-road. It’s seriously durable and handles the bouncing without budging. Works for kids bikes as small as 16”, along with adult mountain, casual, and high end road bikes without touching the bike frame.

Thanks y’all. I’ll give them all a look. It’s for two adult sized (S&L) gravel bikes.
