Sours are what we used to call "skunky beer". It was beer that had gone bad and we threw it out. Ha!

Microbreweries have done a fine job marketing themselves as the hip and cool, and domestics like PBR, Coors, or Miller as the unhip and uncool. I used to be one of those who showed up at the local breweries and was all into the IPA's. I wasn't happy unless I was picking hops out from between my teeth after downing one. I got absolutely tired and bored of it all. I had gained weight and was paying $6 or more for a pint - thanking them for the privilege.

Now I enjoy a refreshing Miller Lite. I can drink those all afternoon on the beach or at a party if I want to, and they're good. I'll go sometimes and have an IPA socially, but it's not my main choice.
How are old are you? Serious question. I feel like this IPA (west coast) fad hit in the late 90s and a lot of us are over it now—it’s a following trying to find relevance though whirlpooling hops, tropical hop varieties, haziness, etc.. I brew my own, mostly light 4-5% sours. There is a generational thing here. 44 here.

Late 90’s? IPAs are more popular now than they’ve ever been.

I don’t run across a lot of people, especially people younger than I am, who say they’re a little bit over IPAs. IPAs are very popular still, especially with a younger demographic, but they are flocking to the the traditional malty, highly hopped, floral and bitter 6.5-9% abv west coast or English IPAs that hit big in the 90s through 2015. What I see now is more creative in the New England, hazy, and juicy IPAs, all using newer hop strains and different hopping techniques (whirlpooling instead of in the boil) to get loads of flavor without too much bitterness, all of which give you the more tropical hop features from those new strains.

Gotcha, I see what you’re saying, I like em all. Hazy, juicy, bitter. Of course I say that and I’ve got a IPA in my fermenter downstairs that’s a newer style lol.

…and I have a Berliner Weisse in my fermenter. I did a juicy IPA about 8mos ago that came out very good. First time I whirlpooled. I might do it again. I upgraded my whole brewing setup at the beginning of covid in 2020–bought a Clawhammer system. There are so many nice brew setups out there now. I started back in 2000 with a pot and two buckets.

Mmm! Haven’t made one of those yet! I haven’t whirlpooled anything though, put them in the boil and I’m going to dry hop here once it’s closer to done. That’s a nice setup, I was actually watching some of their YouTube videos yesterday about cleaning kegs because I just got a keg setup for Christmas. I’ve got an anvil Foundry which I love, makes brewing easy. I thought about starting with a pot when I found the anvil and I knew I wanted to spend more up front to get something better long term.

The Anvil Foundry and the Grainfather are pretty cool setups. You’ll love kegging over bottling, . it saves a lot of time and if you need it to go to a BBQ or something you can always fill a growler.
