Hey! Took my engine air filter out to clean and noticed some build up in the air box. Seemed to be coming from the pvc valve connected. Stuck my finger in there and took about 3 finger swipes to get the area dry and free of oil. Mechanic told me this is normal, though I’ve read otherwise everywhere else…

How many miles on the vehicle?
how many since you last checked?
It all matters - because some is normal. It's been normal for decades due to how the whole PCV system operates, and how and when it can't operate ad so on.

Clean it out, and as Kevin has said elsewhere, buy a quality MAF sensor cleaner (do not use any other sort of cleaner) and clean the sensor carefully.

I'm working on a write-up and diagrams on how the PCV system operates and hopefully it will help explain why a small bit of oil there - especially OLD looking oil like that - can be normal.

I for one, would appreciate reading a technical write up of how and why this valve does what it does. I have a simple understanding of it, enough to know it needs to ventilate the crankcase and when its forced to because of bad blowby, the oil/air mixture makes a mess of intake tubes, sensors (MAF and Intake Air Temp sensors), throttle bodies, intake manifolds, valves (but not the Pentastar’s valves) and spark plugs.

Staying ahead of this oil coated mess is necessary by keeping things cleaned, often or maybe yearly but if your writeup could also include the cause and effect of not cleaning the sensors, throttle body and other vital parts (after the PCV) would be helpful.

What also needs to be explained is the process of the crankcase air pressure before the PCV and why it’s there. We either experience massive Blowby or non at all that can be felt with your hand over the oil fill cap taken off while engine is running.

Piston rings that are either seated properly or not very well determines the volume of oil sent back to the intake by the PCV. I’d like to know if we even understand how to properly break-in our piston rings or is this a non issue because we trust the engines have already been broken in right at the factory.

roughly 58k on milage & to be quite honest, I can’t remember the last time I checked so it’s possible that it’s been in there since day 1. Thanks for the advice though, very much appreciate it!
