So I've run this through all seasons now, and it still ends up feeling like one of the better routes nearby to Denver. In winter it will offer some challenges, especially depending on recent snowfall, and at all times of the year it offers some amazing views.
I went to the OnX "Masterclass" they hosted on Zoom today and realized I've been putting my routes together incorrectly when trying to designate waypoints/POI. So this is my first "correct" travel folder I've put together.
OnX Route
For those who don't have OnX, you start in Bailey and turn at the bend in town onto County Road 68. You'll continue taking that all the way past Wellington Lake where there's a mild water crossing that will have ice shelving or be completely frozen over in winter. Past that you'll have a mild ascent that has some rock and rut negotiation, but nothing difficult.
Once you're past that, it's largely flat-landing it! You'll eventually take a right onto Matukat Road due west, and ensure you keep on it at the junction at 39.18947, -105.34437. It will veer right.
From then on you'll go past Goose Creek Campground and start some ascent toward the Lost Creek Wilderness, and this will eventually terminate on Tarryall Road. There's plenty of dispersed camping to be had along the way, so if you and your mates are wanting to do something before going to China Wall, this is a great way to stage for that and get out somewhat early the following day, depending on how close to it you camp!
Happy trails, Gladiators!
