Patches & headliner's

Ok, I'm new to Jeeps. How do you get patches to stick to the headliner? I figured a patch with Velcro on the back would stick. It doesn't in the Gladiator. Do I need to put some other fabric up there? Give me your thoughts.

I know what you're saying my headliner is more of a vinyl material rather than a carpeted one like my JKU had.
