Power Steering Failure?

So, went to drive off from a parking spot and I noticed the steering felt super heavy as in my power steering wasn't working!!! I had to really turn the wheel to get it to turn. As I stopped at a stop sign, I turned off the truck and turned it back on and that did the trick. Has anybody else experienced this?

I know the feeling (with my '03 TJ Rubicon). Thankfully, I haven't had this problem.

Have you checked the JL Forum? The JL/JT has an electric power steering pump. Maybe yours is having an electrical issue.

I haven't checked the JL forum yet. I did take it in for service and they pulled the codes. There was a power steering code and a brake code, so not sure what will come of it now (kicking myself for not grabbing the codes from the service advisor)! They did give me a rental and I was embarrassed as all get out to be driving a Buick Encore!!! Looks like an egg on wheels, but at least it gets me from point to point. I pulled up next to a in a parking lot and I felt like I had no street cred!!! LOL I just hope my Gladiator gets fixed and I get it back on the road soon!!

Yeah, I'd seen that about the intermittent power steering failure, but these instances seemed to happen in cold...I'm in Houston and it was about 100 degrees that day. Once I powered the truck off and back on again, the steering was assisted again. I actually got a warning about the traction control in the cluster, but then it was gone and the CEL came on. I'll update when I hear back from the service dept.

Is it normal for the dealer to drive my Jeep 100 miles to try to replicate the issue I had? AND, the problem did not repeat! 100 miles!!! At least top off my tank if you're going to use my truck like that!

It resolved on its own meaning the dealer couldn't duplicate the issue and it didn't and hasn't happened again. I'm hoping it was just an anomaly and the gremlins have worked their way out for good...we'll see! Now that I'm sensitive to the situation, I feel like, sometimes when i'm turning from almost a standstill, the steering is unassisted, but, it's probably hard to turn because the truck isn't moving...again, maybe I'm just aware of the situation that I feel this way.

After what seemed to be a weak battery response the gladiator struggled to start. Monitoring the battery voltage showed it went very low in voltage but after a couple of tries the Gladiator started with multiple warning light lit. Motor was running OK but the steering wheel was frozen, could not move it. Turned engine off and started again. When engine started the voltage did not drop below 9-10volts and this time the steering was OK. This has happened 3 or 4 times in a couple of days. Once driving cautiously on the road I had proper steering at all times. I Recharged the battery but problem remained intermittent. Then a couple of days later the truck started normally with no issues and proper steering wheel effort returned. Been ok for a couple of days now. I believe when the start voltage was very low the computer got screwed up and did not enable the electric steering assist and caused multiple error lights. Only when the start voltage remained higher did everything come up OK with no warning lights and good steering effort. Possibly a bad position on the starter motor caused the excessively low starting voltage but it has been OK now for many starts. You would think the bad starter position would have been hit more often and the problem would reappear but it hasn't. Anyone else experience these issues?

Just wanted to make others aware that I have a gladiator that the steering failed. It has happened about 10-12 times. At first it was usually after the auto start shut the engine down and restarted...there wouldn't be power steering. If I shut it off and restarted it...everything was fine. I figured if it happened again I would take it in and get it checked. It did, just the same as before at a stop...so no big deal...I planned on getting it to the dealer and struggled to find the time. IMPORTANT...it happens at highway speeds as well! I had my two young kids in the jeep on the highway doing about 65 while going around a long sweeper turn when the power went out...it pushed me into the slow lane with no chance of recovering that quick to keep it online. If there would have been a car in the slow lane... or worse if it was a two lane with oncoming traffic...Bad things. We were lucky as I got it under control before we went off the shoulder and road. I was a mile from the dealer and drove it straight there. There was no arguing or "having to reproduce" the problem. I delivered it to them "produced" and they kept the vehicle. It had codes as well and they couldn't find anything wrong when they checked everything Chrysler told them to check, so they gave it back to me telling me they think it may have been a grounding issue. I was stupified that they gave it back to me knowing the events that happened with my kids in the car at highway speeds! Needless to say...they fixed it two times and it happened again and again. It currently is at the dealer for the third time as they really do not know what is wrong with it. The second time they said it was the electric power steering module and replaced...that didn't fix it. I told them I refuse to drive the vehicle to see if it fails the fourth time (after three fix attempts) to be able to use the lemon law. It has at times been over a month between it happeneng...although it became more frequent and severe (more and more codes were thrown) as time went on. At this point I do not feel safe putting my family in this vehicle...especially after I was told it was fixed the two previous times. This post is not for any other reason than to make others aware that if it happens at the wrong time or the wrong place...it could be a serious crash. For clarification in case it is coincidental, My gladiator is a six speed manual and at first it only happened when restarting after auto stop/start. It progressed until it actually started happening while driving along...as in the turn at highway speed.

Mine just did this the other day. Driving on rt80 doing ard 70 inPa. A long sweeping curve to the right and all of a sudden as coming out of the curve steering wheel froze/locked up. Not a great feeling going 70mph. Luckily no one was next to me as it put me in the slow lane from the fast lane. This is only time it has done it and haven’t got a chance to bring it in to dealer yet.
Definitely scary....

I woukd not be ok with 100 miles. 10-20 fine but a 100 is a guy taking it home with him over the weekend and driving it like he stole it!

Not a good feeling...It happened to mine about 15 times. I always took it to the dealer with the steering out. It's hard to drive it like that but I live very close to the dealer...I didn;t want to deal with "We couldn't reproduce it" so I delivered it to them "produced". The fourth time I took it in"produced" they kept it and worked with me to get in a new one. Over time it began to happen much more often. They never figured out what the problem was and they tried several things to fix it but no luck. Good luck and be safe...I did not have to lemon it, Chrysler business department was very easy to work with as was my dealer. Against my wife's better judgement, I just got got my replacement about a month ago.
