Oh sorry I mis read the original post. I would say in that case run it until it’s dead, keep up with maintenance obviously. There are junk yard transmissions that are guaranteed to work for a certain period as well, I’ve had some delivered to my door for less than $600.00 and honestly a transmission is way easie to replace than an engine. The last one I did I paid a mechanic $400 to replace so I didn’t need to deal with the dang heat.

The fact that there are millions of these XJs and that they are simple makes them easy to work on for pretty much everything except a heater core.
Thanks for the idea. If i need a new trans ill look into any scrap yards that guarantee their stuff for a decent amount of time.

The problem i have when someone tells you a vehicle isnt worth the cost to keep it on the road is this: Lets say i did put 6 or 7k into my XJ. Atleast it would be like a car with 0 miles on its most important components. In todays market where am i going to get a reliable vehicle for work for 6 or 7k? Sure i might find something but what if something goes wrong with it, then im back to square one with a high milage used vehicle. Its like yeah i probably couldnt sell my XJ for the price of a new tranny installed but i cant get another reliable vehicle for that price either. I have been driving this XJ since 2004 and yeah its had its problems but i couldnt even be 7 grand into this XJ and its been driving me around for almost 20 years. All the friends who said i spend more on keeping an old car running have for sure spent so much more constantly buying new cars over the same time span. Thats why im debating that its worth some money to keep it going.
Back to the sentiment, because the XJ I got was second hand, and there were questions on the previous owner not really take care of it, I paid and paid to keep her running until it quit on me. She was suppose to replace my YJ as my daily. But as much as I liked my XJ, honestly I wasn't very attached to it and had always been more of a financial burden most of the short time I had her. Now if it had been my YJ, which I do have sentimental value in, bough new in 1995 and had been my daily driver from then till I got my XJ and then my JT, I would probably continue to pay to keep her going despite what my wife says because she's always been reliable, never let me down and has always been a fun ride. So now I take it easy on her, she still has her original engine with almost 250K. Not to mention we've got history. So I see where you're coming from. It'll all comes down to what you want and what you are willing to do.
It's like Han Solo's relationship with the Millennium Falcon, or Malcom Reynolds and the Serenity, Dean Winchester and his '67 Chevy Impala, Bo and Luke Duke and the General Lee. I'd cite Star Trek but Kirk and Picard didn't seem too attached to their starships seeing as they keep getting the Enterprise destroyed. I digress.
So if you have the same relationship with your XJ that I have with my YJ, my vote would be to keep her going.

Thanks man I appreciate the advice. I think I'm going to keep her going. Don't get me wrong I had to put work into her every now and then but it wasn't anything abnormal for the amount of miles I have.
