I purchased this off the gentleman who was sent it by mistake from Rampage (instead of the JLU version). I only have one previous experience with a soft top and that was the factory one for my JKU. I can only speculate how it compares to the factory JT soft top, but this definitely seems to fit the description of what I think of as a fair weather top...I don't know that I would be overly confident with it in a heavy rain storm or the car wash for that matter. If you were the kind of person who likes to run a soft top all the time, I am guessing the premium factory top would be a better choice over a frameless design.
The install was pretty tedious and time consuming (the door surrounds alone required nearly 50 screws for assembly). And the rear panels and window were a royal PITA to clip on but that probably had more to do with the fabric needing more stretch. I watched a video of a JLU install and predictably the design and install are basically identical until you get to the rear. Compared to what I remember about my JKU factory soft top install (which was a take off), I hated this about 10 times more.
So what's to like? The look is awesome and the "sunrider" feature works pretty well. I haven't take it on the highway yet, but at speeds up to 50 mph I can barely notice much difference from the hard top in the noise department. The tinted rear window is also a plus. I am not sure how quick or easy it would be to remove the whole top, but between opening the sunrider and unzipping the rear window it might take you 60 seconds. My only concerns would be about durability and how waterproof it is. Compared to my old wrangler, I could seem myself enjoying a soft top a lot more on the JT with the lack of the rear hatch and a million zippers.
