Rewinding spare tire winch - how much tightened?

When you put the spare tire back, how much do you need to tighten the winch?

The manual says " Continue to rotate until you feel the winch mechanism slip, or click three or four times. It cannot be overtightened."

Does this mean I should tighten it as much as possible(by hand)?

There's a coil spring dangling at the end of cable. Should I tighten until the spring fully contracted?

Just "LITERALLY" do what the Owner's Manual says.

"Continue to rotate until you feel the winch mechanism slip, or click three or four times. IT CANNOT BE OVERTIGHTENED."

Only dropped mine once, followed the directions when replacing. Seemed to work as advertised.

That is perhaps the most clearly written sentence possible for an owners manual.

Impossible to misinterpret as I read it.

If you follow it to the letter, I'd say you will be fine.

Thanks I will check the torque again, I stopped tightening when I felt resistance but didn't hear click.
