Wow now that's a hell of a markup. I thought $300 more than another shop was a little steep at my dealership. If they pulled some crap like that I would of considered buying elsewhere. That's crazySo, where to begin?
First of all, the dealer mark up on wheels, tires and the labor to put it all together is typically outrageous. If you have one that is being reasonable, fantastic. You are always better off buying the wheels and tire and then going to a chain like Discount Tires and having them mount/balance them. If you are not comfortable then installing them yourself, they can also swap them out. Then sell your take offs on the open market, but feel lucky if you get 75% of the original cost. Value can only be determined by the market and what someone is willing to pay. You can even purchase your wheels and ask DT to match or beat the online price for tires, have everything shipped to DT and when they are ready go pick them up or have them installed.
My rip off dealer tried to charge me $10k for wheels and tires mounted, balanced and installed and I ended up paying $5k for a better wheel. I then sold the 4 upgraded Rubicon wheels/tires that came on the truck for $1,200 (still have the spare), which is a fraction of the dealer retail price.
However you proceed, best of luck and don’t let them play the various margins against you.
