I have been wanting a little more storage space for recovery gear/tools, and I am short so I liked the concept of the Swing-Out cases. What I didn’t like about the Swing-Out cases are #1 the price ($200 per side), and #2 that they don’t really fit the contour of the JT’s bed as they are a generic “one size fits all” in regards to the cases. The hinges and latching mechanism however are JT specific. Finally, they also take away potential space for mounting additional tools like a Hi-lift Jack, shovels, etc.

So… I present to you the first Swing-Out 25mm Ammo Can cases!!!

The 25mm ammo cans fit perfectly in the back corner of the JT bed. They can be found in metal and plastic versions. I chose the plastic, and originally thought it would be cool to swing them out and just dump out my recovery gear as they open from both sides. Unfortunately- the mounting points inhibit the bottom side from opening. I’m sure that a mounting plate could be fabbed up that would enable both top and bottom to open but I spent enough time on this project and just wanted to get er done. I purchased the hinges, mounting plates, and spring-loaded levers from Swing-Out directly. The ammo cans I found online. I requested the most original ones available as they usually repaint/refurbish them for resale, and I wanted to keep the badass military markings for the looks. A whole lot of elbow grease, measuring/guesstimating, and a little fabricating later, I am very happy with how this project turned out!

Total cost for both cases, hinges/hardware was around $240. I know some might think that the originals for $160 more would be better or not worth the time. I am planning on adding molle panels to the sides/cab so that I can mount up a jack, shovel, recovery boards, fuel, fire extinguisher etc. so these are perfect for me. I will have to post once the whole bed is complete.

First pic is condition I received ammo cans in. I cleaned up the spray paint carefully with acetone to preserve the original markings. Rest are during fab, the finished project, and last is a little vid of it in action. It was hard to film with one hand- the case wanted to swing closed as I was parked on my driveway which is at an angle!
