Long story short, an idiot borrowed my car and did some considerable damage, mainly cosmetic, to the underside of my JTR. I don’t want to get into it.

I started to noticed a vibration at 50-60mph and after an additional inspection crawling under the Jeep, I noticed the driveshaft carrier and bearing is completely crushed. I didn’t see this the first time I crawled under.

Is this something that can be replaced individually or do I need a new driveshaft? Is this a common part to get damaged when skid plates are not employed?

I’m thinking (hoping) this will be an relatively easy job in the driveway, no lift needed. Anyone done a carrier and/or full driveshaft replacement?

TIA.

I’m starting to look at replacement driveshafts on eBay. Is there a way to tell if the driveshaft falls under the recall (no grease in the monoblock) or if it’s been addressed? Doesn’t appear that part numbers changed when the recall was done.

Holy crap! I’ve wheels some pretty big rocks with mine and haven’t touched that! Yes, it can be replaced without lifting up the Jeep.

Thanks. I’m wondering if I should take this opportunity to replace with a single-piece driveshaft...

That sucks. Only two people are allowed to drive any of my vehicles. Me and my wife. We pay for them so we care enough to take care of them. Hopefully you can find a solution. :like:

Carrier bearings are easy to replace. Driveshafts are one of the most common failures for vehicles driven on trails with rocks. The extra length of a JT makes that rear driveshaft more prone to damage. With stock-sized tires that driveshaft is easy to snag on a big rock.

Can I replace the carrier bearing by itself?

I've replaced it on my F350. It was an afternoon job.

Perhaps it’s vehicle dependent? I’m having a hell of a time finding the PN for the carrier bearing itself. I can only find complete rear driveshaft assemblies...
