10% for carry-out. If they don't like it, cancel their carry-out option.

Tipping is not mandatory, no matter how much they try to guilt you.

Tipping percentage is at your discretion. Don't let them try to guilt you.

If you receive poor service, not food or alcohol, but actual service at the table, there is absolutely nothing that says you have to tip. If you reward poor performance, it will continue.

It is not up to the rest of us to compensate someone to offset their low pay. They made the choices, we didn't.

I refuse to make a choice of pre-selected tip percentage.
I refuse to tip back of house employees that make a higher rate.
I refuse to tip at counter for pick up of ordered carry out.
I always tip in cash, not on credit card.
I will tip a delivery driver more than a server in a sit down restaurant. The driver is burning his gas to deliver my food.

On another note not in the same class, I will dispute every surcharge on a bill that wan't posted in the menu or in large print when I enter the building. It's illegal in most places.

I wanted to get other opinions as I tend to be generous with my tipping for good service, but nowadays people/places are asking for tips when almost zero service has been rendered.

An example: Yogurtland
  • I walk in with my kids.
  • There's usually nobody behind the counter and the the worker is in the back.
  • There's a station to grab a cup.
  • We take our cups and fill the frozen yogurt ourselves.
  • There's a station for toppings.
  • We choose our toppings and fill the cups ourselves with self-serve tongs.
  • We walk up to the register and place our cups on the weigh machine.
  • At this time the worker comes from the back and pushes a button on the register.
  • I place my ATM card in the reader and punch in my PIN.
  • In looking at the screen, it asks for a tip with [22%] - [20%] - [18%] as options (in that order) and then [Other] is listed below.
  • It was like $18.50, so if I selected 22%, that's an extra $4 or so. Did this person really deserve $4 for pushing a button while we did the actual work?
  • I selected [Other] and punched in $2.00 (which I thought was very generous) and went on our way.
Is that being a dick?

I understand times are tough, but we're all having challenges and it seems everywhere I turn, I'm being asked for a tip. Plus, in the scenario above, I don't think the worker gets all $2 of my digital tip. So it's like Yogurtland gets extra profits.

What are your guys thoughts? I'd especially like to hear from someone in the service industry.

Like when I go pick up my pizza at the pizzaria (I drove there), am I expected to tip the guy handing me the pizza? They slip me my receipt and ask me to sign and I swear that "Tip" line stares back at me ? How much do you tip in this scenario?
Late but no not a dick IMHO.
Your definitely right on this tipping thing is out of control. I would have "Tipped" $0.00 or to be a dick $.01

That article is B.S. Tip if you want to, if the service is deserving not just expected. At a small local restaurant nearby my place, I typically round up to the full dollar or a dollar for a tip when I eat there, it's breakfast normally and most is cooked to order.

A tip is something that you GIVE for service ABOVE and BEYOND. They get paid to provide you a service. If they go out of their way to give a little extra, they they get tipped. This week I have left an .11 cent tip to round up because I had to pour my own beer and I have left a 35% tip at another spot because of the great wine and food recommendation. Fast foods, coffee shops, etc., I never tip there.
I don't consider this being a dick. I was a server for three years in college and made $200 a night on a slow night because I understood the idea of what good service means to people.

Starbucks where the Barrista takes and makes a custom order.
No, just no. I will only be found in a coffee shop when staying at a hotel and that usually means standing in line for 20 minutes waiting on "custom orders" when all I want is a large black coffee.

They don't tip in Europe
They don't tip in Europe because the waitstaff is paid a living wage! Here in the states we like to skimp on paying them anything above $2 an hour because the business assumes they will make the rest up in tips. The argument is always "If we pay them more money we have to charge more for the food". So what? This is an apples an oranges argument (unless you're cheap). Do you want to pay more for the meal or pad that expense with a tip? If you pay them more in wages and eliminate tips we might see this balance out.

Last thought while my second cup of coffee is surging. If we are going to continue with tipping then stop adding mandatory tips to my bill because as mentioned earlier "sometimes the service just sucks!".
