Hey Y’all - apologize for the long post…

I’m brand spankin’ new to the forum. Quick background: have a 2015 Grand Cherokee Eco Diesel that is dead at the dealership with failed High Pressure Fuel Pump that’s a safety recall/warranty issue. Currently in a stalemate with Stellantis - repairs ($13k - $15k) are covered but new pumps aren’t available Because they keep failing. Pursuing Lemon Law/Buy Back. So I bought my new ‘22 Black Mojave in January, about $9,500 below sticker. Almost bought a manual Overland but the GVWR was less than the 6,000+ needed to write it off. The Mojave - net of tax savings - was significantly cheaper and WAY nicer!?. So I’ve got the 8 speed auto and I’m loving the whole rig!

Will upgrade to 35” BFG’s (maybe 37”?) once the Falkens are worn. Cab height is my concern for parking garages. Don’t love my stock wheel look - may paint the chrome and add a touch or orange. Other than a decal switch, grey camo neoprene seat covers (surfing/saltwater destroys the leather) and a bedrug it’s bone stock.

I’ve been searching for a Tonneau that will suit my needs: rugged and not look cheesy (aluminum/Diamond plate), legitimate weight bearing capability (elk, deer or wild boar on top from bowhunts), and versatile enough to drive partially open to allow for longer loads. That effectively eliminates a roll top. My son and I surf a lot, but boards longer than my shortest board (6” 2”) are a “Gladdy” issue. Don’t want a roof rack or a permanent tall rack because of clearance issues. Short to mid bed rack is perfect for a quick trip to surf.

The solution took a bit If research. Narrowed Tonneau down to Diamondback, Renegade or Lomax (black Diamond “professional”). Love everything about the Renegade but the cost and lead time. The L track is genius… but $3k?!!! I have a tailgate pad that should work with my 7’ board (maybe my 9’ ?) with partial opening tonneau. Diamondback looks almost perfect, but $2,300+ with taxes for the 400lb capacity SE, and you have to remove the rear panel to drive partially open. Diamondback therefore requires my longer boards to go on top of tonneau, or on a bed rack (another $500 - $700+).

I found a cheaper compromise:

Lomax Professional “Black Diamond” (500 lb capacity) with TS Elevate rails!

I had to get verification that the two will work together (Truck Hero/Truxedo doesn’t list compatibility with competitors). Assuming it does (“Real Truck” customer service researched and said “yes”, so I have a return if it doesn’t AND I got discount pricing!), I have most of the functionality of the Diamondback (adding anchor tie downs to the TS Rails) for about $1,500 all in, with ability to add ANY t slot compatible bed racks (Billy Bars, Thule, Yakima, etc) that I can run or remove “at will” depending on the trip. I haven’t decided on that yet, will see how the initial setup works first. The downside is I will lose the glorious easy access to the front 1/3 of the box vs the Diamondback. I could mitigate this by going with the Lomax “Stance” model, but I want the extra crossbar supports/capability of the “Professional”. I hope I don’t regret the compromise.

I ordered it all yesterday and will update the progress on this thread with pictures of the finished setup!

Cheers Mates!

Here is what the setup looks like. I’m making a surfboard pad solution that allows me to use carabiners as quick attachments to the anchor points, using rubber straps surrounded by Thule board pads. I may use pvc pipe with pool noodle wrap for added structure inside the pads, but I don’t think I’ll need to. For boards that are too long for inside the bed (up to 6’ 2” will fit diagonally with the tailgate up) this system will easily and securely carry boards on the top of the Lomax. Big shout out to Alex, moderator of the Real Truck vender account for dialing me in. Let me know if anyone wants to see my carabiner pad solution.

That looks good! - I don't have the pro series Lomax. I have the standard cover and I'm curious on how well the edges fit and seal from water, especially towards the front/bulkhead and the rear tailgate area, and in the corners. I'm not concerned with water tightness and being 'bone-dry' ... I just want to be able to throw some tools or groceries in the bed and not have to worry about them when it rains. Does the elevate rails raise the Lomax cover leaving a gap big enough for rain (or a carwash) to get inside? Did you have to add any extra seals or gaskets to close up some gaps?
