I plan to repurpose the factory tire carrier for on-board air compressor and tank. I need to relocate the spare tire to the bed.

Is it better to tie down the spare closer to the cab or to the tailgate?

What else do you plan to have in the bed, then what do you need more ready to access? That might help you decide what is best for you. That along with the actual size "weight" of tire you are dealing with too. As a pre runner fast access to spare might be higher priority just trail ride or around less rapidly needed tire change. Quick access to a cooler might better or able to toss in a few things.

I put a dual compressor under the passenger seat behind the drivers seat. More convenient than under the truck and really not that loud. Spare tire over the axle is better for weight and easier to access.
