I went to rent a U-Haul car dolly today from an actual U-Haul facility (not from the back of a car repair shop). The counter person told me that I was not able to rent any trailerable item there because my Gladiator has a soft top. I must have made a face or something because the manager walked right over and said that "they do not rent to Jeeps with soft tops because the occupants will die in a roll-over, U-Haul policy." I asked if that was corporate policy and he said yes. I figured I wasn't going to get anywhere with either of them so I left. Does this make any sense? Did anyone hear of this before?

Thank God I don't ever have to tow with this thing - certain death is imminent.
That's been their policy forever wanted to rent one when I moved from Alaska in 2001 they wouldn't do it because of the soft top on my wrangler no problem when I rented one with my hard top gladiator last year though

A few years ago I tried to rent a small trailer from them and was told no Jeep Wranglers, period. I had a hard top on at the time. This was before Gladiators were even on the market. The counter guy said no Wranglers because of a previous incident that had resulted in a lawsuit. Total BS, IMO.

that's been Uhaul policy for a while. i rented a trailer 10yrs ago with my Jeep Liberty with a sky slider. Initially counter guy said i couldn't because the sky slider was a "soft top", had to argue with the manage and he let me rent the trailer

Some what related to the subject. My brother in law moved from Denver to Arkansas back in Sept. Rented a 30 ft U-Haul truck. Rented from point A to point B, one way. After we got done unloading the truck. We took the truck to the nearest U-Haul place to turn in. After doing the paperwork at the desk. The guy said that he has to charge another $3,000 for the rental because we brought the truck to the wrong place. This place was less then 30 minutes from the house. We had to go another 1.5 hrs away to drop the truck off without getting nailed for the charge. The first place was a large U-Haul business. The place we drop the truck off at was a hole in the wall. We past it up twice trying to find it.

So....if you are renting one way. Make sure where you are to return the trailer or truck.

I ran in to this issue the other day trying to rent a flatbed trailer.. Crazy thing is I have a hardtop with the sunrider top. First uhaul place didnt have the trailer in stock so they sent me 30 mins to another location and when I got there the old man said you have a soft top and wouldnt let me rent. Pissed me off that the sunrider was still considered a soft top. Oh well sunbelt rentals earned my money that day and for the future. I called Uhaul customer service but should've known it was just going to be a call center rep restating the policy.

Adventures with U-Haul I've rented a few over the years almost all was PTA turn in and pick up location has been flaky at times. Renting a car hauler once the U-Haul person was telling me that my XJ didn't have high enough hitch to hookup the trailer I had a few laughs on that I had to use drop hitch and dig holes for tires to set in to hitch it up. Probably one of the easiest trailer towing trips I've had. 4:56 gears 33 in tires large rear drum brakes hauling another XJ ? :like: Last was using a rental Ford 4x4 pickup from different rental Co. hauling same XJ from Savannah GA to my place in AL. I had to drive past 3 or 4 U-Haul places to return the car hauler. Then to airport to drop off truck, Uber from airport. Finding a 2in ball that fit the bumper was a mess on short notice, no receiver hitch mount. Then trying to not scratch bumper or leave marks. ;) 2 trips XJ and MJ from Huntsville AL to Savannah GA. When I moved my 90XJ from Savannah to Huntsville, I towed it with LJ and car dolly. I wouldn't recommend that, LJ might have disk brakes but if stopped on grade parking brake and in gear it would still roll. Might have been due to it being a modified for rock crawling (aka: heavy SOB)I thought about swapping it around for the trip and towing LJ. At the time I had the soft top on I think.
