Thanks. That's exactly where I'm at. Noises can be super tricky to pinpoint

I was actually thinking about changing the front wheel bearings because it is a fairly simple job, but then I had to stop myself for a reality check.

I told my wife I was going to bring it to the dealership to have them fix it and she said something along the lines of " you know they're going to laugh at you, and you don't want them working on your Jeep anyway...". I hate it when she's right.
If it was front wheel bearings the noise would change as you rowed the steering wheel back from left to right to left. As each wheel is weighted and unweighted, the sound would change.

You would do well in any field that requires attention to detail.

Have you thought about becoming a quality engineer?

Ha.
Funny you say that. I've dabbled in a little QA & RCA over the years. I'm actually a Mechanical Engineer supporting the power generation industry so things need to be done right. Oh, and I've done a few high-level restorations over the years. The only issue with lots of attention to detail is that some people see it as OCD.

I am slightly nervous about that, but its a new, small, family owned gear & axle shop, and they seemed very knowledgeable and have a warranty. I'm hoping they stand behind their work.
I was surprised when he told me I DIDN'T need to come in @ 500 miles for a fluid change and inspection, though...
Interesting. I've never heard of any shop not wanting you to follow a fairly specific break-in and oil change.

I'm not surprised you are an engineer.

My wife is a bit like you. Its a spectrum. You can have a brain that focuses on detail. At some point it becomes a bit OCD. Its not like you ARE or you ARENT.

Where are you in CT? I lived in the New Haven area growing up and then lived in Essex for 20 years before moving to the Boston area.

In case anyone comes across this thread: For my vehicle, hissing sound through the parking brake cable ended up being an early sign of a failing back differential. The sound would change slightly if the parking brake handle was moved up or down slightly. Didn't depend on accel/decel. A few thousand miles later more obvious noises showed up from the back differential. When it was obvious enough I brought it in and they put on a new axle.
