Is there any rhyme or reason that a particular vehicle makes it to a lot? I guess another question would be who determines what options get put on a vehicle that is not a customer ordered unit. I have seen some random options on dealership lot JTs that seem out of place.

The dealer can order certain optioned vehicles. They’ll do this based on the market they serve and what sells.

As an example, Jeep dealers in Texas will, perhaps, order more 4x2 grand Cherokees than a dealership in Michigan. The Michigan dealer would prefer more 4x4 grands because their market calls for something worthy of snow.
This is just an example and not based on actual numbers.

Dealers get what they get or what they can sell.

And some models are just different enough to make it hard to shop locally.

For some high volume cars, dealers get kick backs on ā€œpopular equipmentā€ packages, you would see 15 of the exact same mid spec, car or SUV just in every different color.

The Chevy dealerships near me load themselves up with cheap cars that way... or used to when you could get loads of new cars.

I have heard some Ford dealerships are told by Ford what they will be buying, and don’t get any say in it.

Gladiator trims when I bought were either low trimmed Sport S’s or left over launch editions or heavily equipped Rubi’s. My Overland was one of the only with leather that wasn’t a launch edition, has the stupid built in Bluetooth Speaker, but didn’t have LEDs, just kinda a hodgepodge of equipment. Probably explains why it sat on the lot from basically launch until summer 2020.
