On my VW TDI Golf, all I had to do was add a bulb, because the harness already had the plug. They were automatically actuated with the parking lights. So, when your lights came on in automatic mode or I’d manually switched on the parking lights they were on. I’d tie them into this portion of the wiring harness at each corner.
Rear fog lights should not automatically come on with the parking lights. They should only be used when low-visibility conditions exist that justify their use.

Porsche rear fog lights just turn on the left rear brake light. At least that’s what they did in 2002, (last time I drove one)
When I was in Germany in the early '90's, the left rear red light was a standard item. My diesel rabbit (zero frills - manual and no power steering) had an extra click on the turn signal lever that would leave that light on and no other. I was told it was for parking on narrow streets at night, it would leave that one light illuminated for drivers, and not drain your battery.

I'm my 04 audi and in my 08 VW, it was another separate bulb, and bright as heck. But yes, only left rear. I remember I had to pull the light switch out to activate them. And i also remember the turn signal thing. Mine were US Spec, but back then, they left that stuff on the US cars too, even though it's not a requirement here.

On German cars it is a single bright red light on the left side; the wife’s Audi and my Porsche have the rear fog feature. The last Merc we owned had the feature functioning as well. We had a couple BMWs in the 80s that had sockets and switches, but no wiring harness. I happen to like them for fog and snowing conditions.
