pH is around 9 I believe, compared to the soak I use before plating, before dilution with water it's at 11.

I use the sh!t out of mine and have not melted the rope. I also have good air flow across the drum and always pull the rope out to work off the first wrap.

Well I'll throw my .02 on this subject from over 35 years of use of them.... long and photo heavy.

. With a little experience on winches... cable vs synthetic line cable holds up to less maintenance, dust, rocks, and stuff along that line. Synthetic is less likely to kill you when it hits a failure point, needs better care though and can be fixed in field easy.
I've got at least 9 different winches. Starting with a old Ramsey 8k that I changed out to synthetic line right away. If I was near home I would snap a new photo of it. Second line on it now a pre Badlands 8k still runs cable and throughly abused left out in weather for last 20 or so years. A 6k short drum Mile-Marker I finally changed to synthetic line on was on my LJ changed out for Q-Tec 9k synthetic line changing over to when I reinstall it. Needs new solenoid packs now. A off brand on JT 12k supplied with synthetic line. Then multiple smaller ones.
Some of the bad performance from winches is due to the rated load is first wrap of line or cable not 2nd, 3rd or top wraps each layer is about 20-25% lower. Top wrap can be as low as 2k or less. Line damper isn't just a neat thing to have it's a safety to slow line hooks or anything that comes loose. A heavy wool blankets will work. On rigging I've got overkill on it, winch line specific that I don't mix. The following pictures are most of rigging in my JT. I keep synthetic line covered I made my own cover, tied up a half dozen soft shackles myself, 3 tree saver straps. On synthetic lines melting they can or will if winch is allowed to get to hot, reason why top quality lines have specially end rapping or hear resistance.

Other stuff needed are good gloves, and the most important thing... Don't rush, stop, plan the recovery think about where the vehicle or objects can go and will go on recovery and if something fails. A failure of chains, shackles winch line or hooks can and will kill or take body parts. Some of the times someone hit doesn't even know it happened until the blood sprays. I've seen some lose fingers and worse.
A few weeks back I guided the recovery of a SUV being recovered that was about rolled over into a 10 or so foot deep pond. That was done with my JT and friends F350 both vehicle winches. To change winch line direction I had rigged snatch rings off trees the road beside the pond.

I never had any problems with my first winch over-heating. It never killed a battery, and was 100% duty cycle. It would run as long as you wanted it to. Didn't need any sort of electric disconnect, totally safe if you got hit in the front end.
DO wear gloves!
