This one is from 1982. full-time 4wd has been the term used for this type of 4wd for ages. Looks like jeep has called it Selec-Trac for a long while too.

Just a question is it normal in dealships to take a deposit. I have ordered over 20 vehicles cars and trucks and have never put a deposit down. And have always been told if I decide not to take it they will simply sell it to someone else. Honestly if you are not ordering something really goofy the vehicle will sell and the dealership will not loss any money anyway. I see keeping your deposit as the dealership being a dick about it.

They are all taking deposits now. At least around me, Ford and Stellantis are. Technically, they are under no obligation to refund it if you back out, but I've been told by jeep and Ford dealers that since the dealership new inventory allocation is so low right now, they'll gladly refund my money, because it gives them an extra unit to sell.

100% on you lol. I’ve never owned a Jeep and never heard of full time 4WD. I read the description right there on the damn website by clicking “more info” where it says, “selec-trac 4WD system.” Sorry but it isn’t that hard.

AWD doesn't have a Low Range. Full Time 4 Wheel Drive does have Low Range.

I was in a similar situation after I placed my order they announced High Velocity Yellow. I spoke with the dealer but the order was already locked. They even reached out to someone at Jeep but still unable to change. I was told no changes after the VIN is assigned. I was ready to lose my deposit to change colors but the wife said not to bother. I think if you’re willing to lose the deposit and order another the way you want it spec’ed the dealership likely isn’t going to have an issue. Just call and discuss it with them.

Currently having an issue with a a dealer mulling around while my Mojave inching closer and closer to D1 status.. I want "select trac" but wan't a clear option from the get go.

Anyway they cashed my 1000.00 deposit via a phone call, 2-3 days before I was able to come up and sign any order paper work. Once the paper work is signed am I legally obligated to buy the vehicle? Can I walk away minus 1000.00 It's crazy that they're not entertaining taking more of my money for an option that was not clearly communicated.
My order agreement included a return of my deposit if I cancelled. I would not give the deposit till then in order to ensure the return was available for deposit

When I ordered my JT. I went on line and built it about 4 or 5 times. Printed out the last build and took that to the dealer. We sat down and went through everything line by line. Then handed him the deposit and signed paperwork. And waited for it to show up.

Be glad you didn't order a Grand Cherokee with all the options that's on it. My '13 TrailHawk had 3 different transfer cases that I could have to choose from. And 2 different suspension systems.
I did the same as you. I purposely decided not to get the 4Auto. Had a TJ in the 90s and never had a situation where the 2wd, 4hi or 4lo was not enough and I lived in Denver. Even when pavement was dry snow dry snow alternating never needed a 4Auto because my tires were perfect. Maybe I am old school.

That's just not the lingo, though, and it's been described as full time 4wd for ages, since before your 04 LJ was made. This picture is from mid a 90's Isuzu. It's full time 4wd. Not AWD . I didn't create the lingo either, but it is what it is. I think full-time 4wd has been the terminology for this type of 4wd since the 1980s (at least). It's been called that since before AWD was mainstream. It predates AWD on mainstream passenger vehicles.

It's sucks you got burned, but full-time 4wd isn't new, and neither is the term. I hope they refund your money, but this isn't on jeep or the dealership.
I get it. I'm just saying that the lingo isn't as clear and/or as clear to understand for "all" as it is to those who manufacture autos or have experience with this terminology. Thanks for the incite.

If your budget allows to walk away from $1,000 then so be it. But I (as others) ordered my JTM from my dealer after building and pricing online. I read it and made my choice. There was one transfer case choice other than the standard setup, and that is the Selec-Trac. A $795 option. Repeated again, this wording taken directly from the Jeep.com website:

The Selec-TracÂź Full-Time 4x4 System features a 4H-Auto mode that will automatically engage and disengage 4WD as needed to maintain traction in mixed surface road conditions.

Not much more to say. If you think dealer will hold your $1,000 hostage, find another dealer if you are displeased and willing to take the hit. I couldn't do that myself. But it appears that you have lots of choices in your area.

I've been fortunate enough to have always ordered my vehicles from my dealer without deposits or signatures based on trust. But I have always done my homework before I commit.

I’d agree with the many replies that this is something that was not the fault of the dealership and I get it that buying mistakes can and do happen by buyers. I‘d like to help with a suggestion or two.

Keep it simple, and be respectful, tactful, and appreciative when trying following. Take a dozen or 2 donuts or bagels to the General Sales Manager’s desk / office at around 10:30 AM or 2:30 PM on Monday when they will likely have time on their hands to deal with re-work. Politely ask if they would text their Jeep Account Manager to update the order to add whatever options you’d like since it’s still in the initial stages. Then, close your mouth and be silent to give them a chance to speak. If they tell you that there may be some obstacle, then you can always mention that you’ve read that a fewer other board members have updated their orders early on and hoped they could help you with this. Then, thank them and their team for all they’ve done and mention you’d appreciate if the The opportunity presents itself and hand over the tasty treats. If they agree, I think it would be fine to ask if there would be a good time for you to follow up.

Now, most GSM’s are interested in sales and COMPLETING them and with the ones that I’ve dealt with, well, they’re mostly about the big picture of making money and 10 out of 10 on their surveys. So, if you can align yourself with an easy request / change with a treat and a thank you, then I think you’ll improve your odds. Also, maybe it will help keep it in perspective that these are consumable items that risk being totaled at near any intersection you drive through, so it might not be that big of deal if you can’t add the option from that vantage point.

Best of luck!

Also, as far as deposits go, they’re a good thing, and they’re a requirement to protect yourself from price increases and have them confirm you’re protected against them. Still, keep in mind that you can always hand write any number of reasonable conditions on your purchase order that would allow you to back out of a purchase such as a contingency on your current vehicle sale, loss of employment (which would likely be a fail in financing), subject to inspection, etc. Then, keep a copy for your records.

Oh, and a deposit can be as little as $1 or as much as agreed upon unless otherwise stipulated.
