Refining crude into gasoline makes the by-product of diesel. How the hell can they be short on diesel? Sounds like a bullshit bluff.
How does a certain someone get pissed off that OPEC reduces production when they do the same thing in their own country about 2 years prior??
Im by no means an expert here. But perhaps its being sold? Or traded? Or the same byproduct used to make diesel is, or has been, used for production of something else ?‍♂

Sorry, that is internet lore, an old wive's tale. It's not a byproduct of anything.
+
It's made through fractional distillation - the same way gasoline, kerosene and other products are made. Every barrel of oil produces roughly 11 gallons of diesel, while you get about 20 gallons of gasoline from that same barrel. So it's nearly two to one gas to diesel from each barrel of oil.
A barrel of oil is 42 gallons of crude.

Here's something from the web

It's not a byproduct! That's just wrong. It's not a byproduct of making anything else. It's distilled just like gasoline from the same oil.
You get about 11 gallons of diesel to 20 of gasoline, and you get kerosene, and so on.
Diesel is directly taken from crude, not from any byproducts of anything.
A barrel of crude is 42 gallons and from that you get 11, maybe 12 gallons of diesel, you get kerosene, etc. The oil is boiled, distilled like whisky.
Diesel does not result from making anything else - but diesel fuel.

This year appears to be worse than usual, but there are always shortages when it gets cold and the demand for home heating goes up.
And fall harvest and field work uses millions of gallons of diesel, and LP and other fuels are trucked, burning more diesel fuel........

We heard there was a shortage because all the refineries in the south shut down for maintenance around the same time. However between the gulf of mexico , the canadian oil sands, (record production numbers) and peeps switching to electric. I think we should be ok.

It really doesn't surprise me. Was analyzing P&L's for a rental property and the cost of fuel oil is 100% higher than even last year.

2020 avg fill was in the mid 600s
2021: avg fill started the high 700's.
Late: same avg usage, so far and we haven't hit winter and its $1500.

That's per time the truck pulls up. Also its meteoric inflation in a very short time.

Isn't OTR diesel fuel oil with a dye (or without) and kerosene added to keep it from gelling?

Refineries normally shut down twice a year to do their major maintenance. Spring and fall. This is when they switch blends from summer to winter, or winter to summer. The problem is when 2 or more refineries shut down for their outages at the same time. Or one refinery runs into problems and have to extend their outage. I worked one outage at a Marathon oil refinery one year. Supposed to be a 30 day outage. They ran into problems and it ended up to be 50 days. They lost millions of dollars because of that.

I ain’t saying shitola.
Yeah, gotta be careful lest you join the ranks of the unmembers.
I know some things but don't dare say 'em.

I think there are 3 in place already, would have been 4 with Keystone.

Yeah, true - it was a bit of hyperbole meant to state a point without stating the point -but - with increased consumption, those existing can't handle what's needed.
That and cuts in drilling and exploration, tying of hands, and other stuff it means we are no longer in control of our own destiny in that area.

Clear is OTR. Red is off road.

Diesel #1 is also known as winter diesel because it performs better than Diesel #2 in cold temperatures. It has a lower viscosity and is not prone to gel in freezing temperatures. Most stations offer a premium Diesel mix that is blended for local weather conditions

Today's diesel is probably harder or more expensive to make than yesteryear's diesel. Low sulfur, etc.
