Dry rotting tires

Many things can contribute to these including chemicals and most importantly…UV rays.

Speaking of UV -
I've wondered about tires in places like Colorado or other mountain areas where even on a cloudy day you can get sunburn because there's little atmospheric filtering of the sun. I spent a day at a car show/swap meet out there in 2021 and I could feel the effects on my skin, and needing to drink a lot more water.
Does that impact tires?? (not that they need to drink more water...........)

Good question. The smell we…or at least I like with regard to tires is the gas they put off…or put…off gassing. I wonder if the altitude plays a role? Also…visiting chemicals again…= salt.

In OP's picture. That is your typical surface flex cracks around the tread blocks. About 99% of MT tires get it. Nothing to worry about. Now if you get cracking in the sidewall. It's replacement.

When you have cracks like this in the tread block. It's time for replacements.
