Can't see that being an issue. Only 4 quarts came out of mine at 5000 miles. I put 5 in at 1000 miles. Truck is fine. Change at 11k, 4.8 came out.Rookie mistake, did an oil change and forgot to screw the drain plug back in. Lost half a quart so I poured in 4.5. Think I’m good for the next 24 hours until I can get back to a store to get oil?
Good point. I’m sensitive to the issue after my 3.8 in my JK blew two short blocks, both covered under warranty since it ate oil) before I replaced it with a jasper engine.I've had to top off a qt on a road trip during hot weather with a lot of hills running in lower gears high rpm's. That was I'd have blow by "using oil" that was last year. Not a problem with it. Now I'm hauling the rest of 5 qt bottle for topping off when in add on dipstick.
Think about it - most folks don't add oil until it's a quart low - then they add a quart.Rookie mistake, did an oil change and forgot to screw the drain plug back in. Lost half a quart so I poured in 4.5. Think I’m good for the next 24 hours until I can get back to a store to get oil?
He can drive it a quart low without trouble.depends on how many miles... 0? totally good, lol... I wouldn't drive extensively, maybe just to the store to get more...
was it more or less than half a quart? .75? ouch .25? Meh, not bad
Gee, and here I thought it was simply because they can't read. Thanks for clearing that up.This is why the dealerships add 6 quarts. Lose 1/2 a quart and you're still good. Safety factor.
I don't know why people are stuck in the "under 200 degrees is better" mode - maybe it's that old shade-tree lore that just won't die. 217 is still cool. Especially with working it. 219-into the 220s is nothing to even think about.I have never noticed in blow by of oil on mine. I have to go up 10-18 degree climbs 4-5 times daily that usually range from 3/4 to 1.5 miles long. Oil will get up to 219-227 cause I will have to climb in 4 wheel drive 1 &2 gear. The other day over at the farm it was in the mid 60's and I went up the hill on the old road my dad cut in . It is 19&20% grade with a 22% for about 20 yards. Got stuck right at the top on a big fallen limb covered with leaves. Had to back down that sucker after throwing the hidden limb out of the way . Then I hot it real good and made it up. And I expected oil to be hotter but it was about 217 . I look all the time. These fans don't kick on near often enough. I usually run my Jeep a little over full. It has 78,000 on it and hasn't never hurt it. Here is my mileage from the 27th.

What temp does one have to worry about ?I don't know why people are stuck in the "under 200 degrees is better" mode - maybe it's that old shade-tree lore that just won't die. 217 is still cool. Especially with working it. 219-into the 220s is nothing to even think about.
In any case, he's not hurting a thing running 1/2 quart low. Heck, you normally don't add oil until it's down a quart. That's the industry norm, not to keep them topped off every time they drop 4 ounces in level.
Connect JSCAN and monitor - I bet the fan comes on sooner than 230 - likely at a lower power, but it's interesting to watch the wild temperature swings on my JT when driving it around - hits up say around 220, then drops to 200 really fast, then under 200, then up again to 210. It's a lot of wild swings implying something going on and off. What temp does one have to worry about ?
I know that my fan kicks on for the radiator at 230 does the fan have a temp at which it will kick on when oil temp rises shaply from hard climbing ?
