Developed a new issue out wheeling today. My JT started making a whirring/clicking noise, that changes with speed, when descending a hill or on decel while in 4 low. It does not make the noise when under load when accelerating or climbing. It does not make the sound in 4 high or 2WD. It seems to be coming from under the drivers seat but not 1005 sure as I know driveline noises travel. Any ideas? I seems like it's coming from the transfer case. Could it be taking a dump? 19,000 miles, 3.6L gas, AT, 3 1/2" lift on 37's, JE Reel front and Adams rear driveshafts, re-geared to 5.13 and programmed with a Superchips. Please let me know what you guys think.

When my noise started, it was quiet so it was hard to tell where it came from. Over time it got louder and I still couldn't diagnose it. Finally my friend found it after all of the trouble I went through myself trying to track it down. Just like yours, the noise I had increased with speed. Turns out the stock pinion bearing is known to have issues. And there is an upgrade for it.

I'm not saying this is your issue, but if gets worse, it is something I would definitely keep in mind. You may have something loose underneath or something rubbing. Transmission or Transfer Case. Hoping you get more suggestions and find your issues. I found quite a few issues that could have been catastrophic had I let them go on longer.

Here is a video I made about it:

Thanks!

Unfortunately, it seems like it is. And once it happened, I found out through a few others that it's something that can happen at any time because of that type of bearing. When it happened to me, I was driving to SC to go wheeling. Out of nowhere on the interstate, just started making the noise.

I'd really like to know why they used that type of bearing anyway. Why change from a type that was working?

Thats a really good question seems like they always try and fix what aint broke and end up screwing something up. My guess is production cost

I agree. Like the connectors for the doors. The ones on the JK work perfect. So, why change the design to something that has issues? Production cost may be it. Who knows?
