At 2800-3000 rpm your engine switches to the high lift cam profile on the intake cam. It does this by activating two Variable lift solenoids in each head to shut off an oil galley that provides oil to a mechanism in the rockers. There are no diagnostics for when this solenoid malfunctions.

There have been a number of machines with that noise that have had flattened cams
what would be additional symptoms of this? I thought I heard the “ticking” and when I opened the hood I notice oil residue over both valve covers.

Additional symptoms would show up as misfires under load. If you inspect your oil filter you will find metal sludge. Also if you remove a cam sensor it will have a thick metallic paste on it. It is good yo get the cam changed as soon as possible and flush he engine about three times with drive and oil change. Need to run the rpm up and cycle the cam phazers because those will get dirty from the metal and start to get stuck. If they get stuck in the wrong spot during a light high load acceleration, bad things can happen.

Question on phazer cleaning, how often should this procedure be done? I have a pro diagnostic tool that can actuate a “phazer clean” each one, one at a time and I have done it once already. When actuated, it runs a 30 second clean cycle which feels like the engine having a heart attack on steroids before it moves on to the next one … until it’s done.

So can this procedure actually hurt the mechanisms if done too many times? What do “clean” phasers feel like as a pose to “dirty” ones?

No they constantly move while you drive. Phazers that stick or move slow will cause misfires stalling, and generally poor running at high load.

Thank you Dave. I drained the oil and changed the filter and saw numerous small silver metal flakes. Scheduled a visit to the service center for tomorrow to check for the rocker issue.
