This could be an early sign of a failing transmission. Mine started with a reverse thunk, then a 3rd-4th thunk. Ultimately, it was replaced completely at 53,000 miles under warranty. I was lucky to get it done before it failed catastrophically or dangerously. It was in the shop for 35 days. The computer reset, by the way, fixed the issue for about two days then it came back.

This is so much for the ZF 8 speed trans being a trouble free trans. The Jeep is great as long as you don't have the trans problem and the cam problem or the steering problem or the frame problem.

Just wondering if I disconnect the batteries if that will reset the trans computer and possibly cure the cold reverse clunk issue?
So mine did the same thing starting at 30k ,.,, now at 95k it’s getting the slow shift to 4th gear when cold if I don’t use reverse first. Long story short- the seals in the D clutch pack drain out over night and need a few seconds to fill with fluid - ie making a clunk. Depends on the miles and your dealer - replace the trans now or deal with issues later

Isn't there a TSB for that clutch pack?

I did hear of a TSB on the D pack. Not sure what the fix is or if it works.

I am grasping at straws. Hoping for something that works as there has been no answers here.
Why? It’s not a big deal. Many have done it since new. Some people confuse the reverse clunk, without any other issues, with a TSB that’s vaguely related. Mine has done is since brand new. 5.5 yrs of hard driving and a lot of hauling and towing later, it hasn’t changed. I just put it in drive first on cold start ups and then reverse and it’s completely fine. I literally can barely feel mine shift.

On a cold start, first put the tranny in neutral until the idle rpms drop. No clunks when I do this.
You don’t even have to do that. Just throw it in drive and then reverse and it’s fine. I don’t have the patience to wait. lol.
