That is an insanely over-complicated lawn mower. They got it right the first time, no need for that. What if you find yourself on the side of a mountain, weeks away from supplies, and need to cut a lawn?

There was a transition time in computers. I worked on Tandem Non-Stop mainframes and IBM System/36 minis in 1985. Much like key fobs, people who claimed "they don't need to be that big" didn't understand the tech. They did things that the PCs couldn't do at all until at least the late 90s. Now of course my iPhone can blow away a warehouse full of Tandems. I can't quite figure out where to attach the reel to reel tape cabinet though.

Yes. I remember in 1985 going to a demonstration of CAD on IBM minis. They had large CRT screens with tiny dot pitch, about 15 years before same resolution was available on PCs. I asked about CAD on PCs, and they just said "not practicle". Which was true, then.

I posted some time back about removing the switchblade key and putting it on my keychain. The stub of the switchblade still popped out so I drilled and tapped the housing and secured it with a set screw, as you can see in the photo. I really removed the key because I wanted to be able to lock my concole or glove box and NOT have to hand the key over to a valet or service department. The small key ring stays in the console unless I lock it.

Great you posted this. I was wanting to do something similar, except with a separate key (if I can find someone to make one). The question arose - can you confirm the door lock will work mecahnically without the fob electronics being near the vehicle?

Back in about 1991 or there-abouts, I was a manager for On With Life in Ankeny. They wanted a network, email, a way to handle medical records and more.
There was a newfangled network technology, still in its infancy. A company called Gateway in MN made devices to connect PCs via twisted pair Ethernet.
I ordered the cards, "hub" (there weren't switches yet that I recall) and had the building wired.
It was later known as 10BaseT
I suspect I was first in the state of Iowa to use it. The company named "Gateway" was NOT the Gateway computer company with the cows.........

Buy a basic JEEP fob (without remote buttons). Remove key and put it in wallet or elsewhere. Remove battery from JEEP fob. Put fob in glovebox and lock it with the key.

Should you lose your JEEP fob, use the key to get in and then use battery-less fob to start JEEP.

Yes, I just tried this with the key fob 50 feet from the truck. Worked perfectly. No alarms.

I would expect/hope that if you lock the vehicle with the fob, and possibly even just with the fob nearby, that the alarm should set. Then it should NOT deactivate with the key, otherwise someone could just brute force the lock. Have you tried that? Also note that it takes a little bit for the alarm to activate after locking.

Sorry, what I meant was... Arm with the fob, walk away so it's not nearby, let it arm, disarm with the OTHER key. I would hope that sets off the alarm. The close-proximity RFID in the plain fob should then disarm when you press it to the ignition and push.

I am absolutely fascinated about The possibility of an NFC reader/app on your phone. 2019 JLU Rubicon, 2020 manual transmission soft top Sport, if I got a 2021 diesel gladiator, the fobs become completely unmanageable. With two, they already are.

Good video, gives some back up ability. Would want to just prove that the chip start in the spare no battery fob will disable the alarm and let you get home. And in that case why even leave the chip in the fob, just hide the key blade with the chip glued to it somewhere under the Jeep. That way if two of you set off into the bush and somehow get separated they know where emergency key is hidden for some awful reason they make it back to the truck and you don’t.

like mr scented nut said...all the ways we now have to try and solve problems we never had all because we decided we were more smarter

some kit will come out, someone will get into the blob behind the button and figure out the nonsense and bypass the rfid with a matching key’d ignition slot right in the middle where the button is instead, and just a small lock/unlock fob, maybe even built right into the end of the key...one can dream
