What's with the cover on the side of the tail light?

This has been nagging me since before I ordered. I see a lot of Gladiators with a plastic cover on the side of the tail light. I assume the purpose is to protect the lens while running on trails, but my Rubi didn't come with this and I haven't been able to figure out which option it comes with, and why. Can anyone exlplain? Is this an Overland thing? Or something that comes with the LED package? (I have old school non LED)

Are you referring to the different tail lights for BSM (blind spot monitoring) ?
