Have you driven around Des Moines? LOL
Years ago a friend from Toronto flew to Orygun to meet up with his bride-to-be and drive back in her car to Toronto to be married. As they were taking I80 part of the way I suggested they stop by, spend the night and catch up a bit. We met up in Ankeny. He explained that he knew (by reputation) when he was approaching West Des Moines as he was getting honked at, fingered, cut off and nearly run off the road by rude and arrogant drivers who didn't know how to drive in traffic.
He said the drivers here were the worst he'd come across on his whole trip back.
My son describes it quite well - rural people trying to use their rural ways in the middle of urban traffic - clueless and dangerous.
Oh yeah - my travels on 80/35 on the NW side of Des Moines was always hairy. I had to flip the switch between rural driver and city asshole whenever I crossed the river. The biggest thing about that area is if they left the left hand lane (or left 2 lanes) open for passing, it'd be a hell of a lot easier.

Used to have a girlfriend lived near Merle Hay and 86th st area- drove that area many, many times.

The problem going eastbound in that area is all the trucks getting over to the left for 35 North would make things especially dangerous. There was a 1/2 mile area of merge lane on the right that I used to be able to time just right get a hole shot around that mess ;)

Haha! I'm located in Michigan but JD De Moines Works (along with Waterloo and Moline) are my customers and they have some of the worst drivers ever! And I thought Michigan was bad. hahhahaha

Ah, John Deere - Ankeny, where the cotton pickers were, or maybe still are made? The old ordinance plant on the west side of Ankeny? (I never understood why it's called Des Moines works when it's in Ankeny - sort of like the mall of Des Moines is in ALTOONA)

Waterloo - JD took over the Waterloo gas engine works that made Waterloo Boy engines and made them their own.

Anyone at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan this weekend? I saw a hand full of Gladiators up there including @neonGladiatorJT from youtube. Gladiator was a beast and only faulted when my driving talent ran out. For the first time up there don’t think I embarrassed myself too bad. Seen a lot of people with way money in their rigs who had issues like everyone else. Check out the beautiful Scrambler. Can’t wait to go back!

thinking of a trip up next weekend. How is cell reception? I haven’t pulled the trigger on a radio yet.

Also, is it the kind of place that you really should have a group going, and a guide for the first time, or would I be alright on my own?

Dunes closed for the year on 10/31. Think they open up in April or May. Sprint is basically worthless up there but AT&T worked great for my son. If you can find someone who has been there before it is beneficial but not mandator. Everyone loves to help up there so you should be good. Set something up for next year and maybe we can get a bunch of people up there at the same time.

Stop at Bortells for their awesome fried fish. I stop there every time I’m up that way. Oh and have fun.
