Hey everyone,

I just picked up my new 2021 Sport S with the max tow package. I would like to get different wheels since I'm not a fan of the stock ones, and bigger tires. However, after looking through all the threads and being completely new when it comes to wheels, tire sizes, what lift I need, etc. I'm hoping you can help me out. I have a ton of questions and most are unanswered after diving through pages in this thread. I spend probably 90% of my time on the highway, so off road isn't a huge necessity for me. I just want it to look better without compromising the ride quality or mpg too much.

I'll start with the wheels. I know this is a personal preference, but the size and offset is what I want to make sure fits first. I don't want the wheels to stick out to much farther than stock which I know is a problem for some wheels because of the wider axles.

I like the way the Fuel Assault wheels look, but they are 17x9 with a -12mm offset. I looked at the wheel offset calculator and input the stock wheel with the width of 7 and 45mm offset and it says it's extended 83mm, or about 3.25 inches. That comes out to an 1.6 inches that stick out on each side. Would I have to find other wheels with a higher offset so they don't stick out as far? What's the ideal size so they will be essentially flush like stock?

Next, tires. I saw others have 35s/12.5/17 on 17x9 and I also see people talking about 285/75/17. Looking at the BF KO2s on tire rack, I see they offer so many different sizes. I put the info in the tire size calculators and found the 285/75/17 is 33.8 inches tall and they offer 315/70/17 which are 34.4 inches tall. I would save $200 by sticking with the 285/74s instead of going to the 35/12.5 and only $100 from the 315/70. These all fit the 17" rim, but my issue is with the clearance. I don't want to trim the air dams that I saw in the video posted in another thread to fit 35s. I'm guessing the 285/75 are 11.2 inches wide will be a lot easier than the 315/70 that are 12.4 inches wide.

Does any of the tire sizes even matter if I get the 2.5" ride right lift from Clayton? Or would a cheap spacer lift do the job without any issues, and how high would I need? I'm not sure how a spacer lift effects the ride quality vs a brand new suspension lift.

Thank you!

Look at the AEV rims or the Quadratec brand hardrock wheels they are both 17x8.5 which will fit the 315 or 12.5 width tire and keep them close to the edge of the fender. 285/75/17s are a good choice, IMO 315s are too wide and cause the Jeep to track in ruts on the highway and float in rain and snow. For the type of use you mention look at an all terrain style tire, it will ride smoothly and be quiet on the highway.

I decided on 255-80-17 Falkens which are 33.1" spec, fit perfectly, with my stock wheels. Great on highway and trails, retain almost all of the max tow ability.

Do you have any photos? Thanks for your input. This is definitely an option.

Here ya go. I happen to like the stock wheels well enough, but you can find other styles of stock wheels that you might prefer, without going to aftermarket. The 255s are slightly taller than the Rubicon tires but narrower than them, being the same width as the stock max tow tires. They are E rated which is good on rocky trails, ride fine nevertheless, and are more than 10 lb each lighter than the Rubi C rated tires. I accented the wheels with black lug nuts, grade 10.9 (like the U.S. grade 8) that are solid, not having a thin stamped cover like the stock lug nuts.

Where do you get the black lugs? Assume they have the same profile as the stock ones for the oem rims. Looks good.

Another vote for the 255/80-17. An important factor in both wheel and tire selection is weight. These 3.6's suffer alot when you start adding unsprung weight in the wheels (both performance and mileage). It can be offset some by regearing but that's such a hassle when you can prevent it by staying lightweight on the wheels/tires.

So true on the unsprung weight. Does anyone know the weights of the stamped steel Sport wheel vs the alloy Sport S?

Wrangler Duratrac in 255/75R17 is another nice aggressive tire. I think it would only measure a 32" though. 40lbs each so nearly stock weight.

My Sport S aluminum wheels weigh 23 pounds each. My steel spare weighs 24.6 pounds. I would guess the steel sport wheels are in that ballpark.

I ended up going with a small lift and the Kendra 35x10.5x17 on black rhino kelso wheels. Added a little weight from the tires but not much from the actual rims.

Have you actually used a 315 on a stock sized wheel? Your statement couldnt be further from the truth, or at least in mine.

I am running 315/70 on a stock wheel and it drives great with no tracking or any noticeable floating.

I have run 315s on AEV wheels and that was how it felt to me. There no 315 width tires that can be mounted on the stock 7.5” wide rims.
