Very curious about the typical forum member - why all the modifications?

That may have been true in the 50's but personalation is common in today's car/truck groups.
I dunno, my father told me of some mods they made, then the father of my best friend in high school also told of some mods the police didn't care for...... that was all in the 50s.
Dad rigged spark plugs in the tail pipes, coil and a switch under the dash. Get up to speed, let off the gas hard to get a nice rich mixture in the exhaust, pop the switch - BOOM with a nice flash out the back.
There were even performance parts for the old flat heads. A friend's dad painted a white stripe down the middle of his black car - "The Skunk".
Maybe it's more common now, but at least around here, these farm kids who grew up tinkering and making things run, keeping them running, did a lot of things to their cars.

My SX4 sports black YJ door handles (it's a Sport version so things should be blacked out and I didn't like the shiny chrome door handles when all else was black) Also have changed out the front marker lights for lights with no chrome trim around them. So I guess in a way I've been making even that car my own idea of what it should be. The Jeep engine in it doesn't hurt.

This smells like market research or some form of research.
Could well be.......... especially with lack of other questions or posts

Syntax is a bit off too.
That's an American thing. Most non-Americans living in other countries actually do a better job than those raised here because it's taught properly in those countries.
Go to Korea and anyone there who speaks English does a far better job than many I know here.
OTOH, those untrained or who use Google translate sound like the old Nigerian scam.

I dunno, my father told me of some mods they made . . .
My older brother's high school "gang", they had a fish camp (more like drinking camp!) on one of the barrier islands, and wanted a vehicle out there for fun.

No one had 4x4s in those days (early 1960s), but someone had a 1955 Chevy sedan. They made duals by welding rims together. I mean directly rim to rim, no spacer. Of course they used tube tires (still common then) because with the odd way the tires inflated you could get no bead seal.

Put these odd duals on front and rear. Had to cut out part of front fender so you could turn. They barged this rig down to the island, had a lot of fun with it while it lasted. Which wasn't very long, since the radiator sprung a leak, and all they had to fill it was seawater.

You are right. It is not American English. This is what I picked up on.

In my humble opinion there are two primary reason people modify their vehicles. I'll put them in two groups. The first want to obtain a certain look. I will label that group of truck owners "mall crawlers". This group rarely go off road. The second group are people that want to improve the functionality or capability of their jeeps. Those modification are improvements and have a true purpose. I will also concede that there are probably various combinations of these two extremes as well. Enjoyed the discussions of this thread!

Your "mall crawlers" thing hits about 3/4 of all cars at car shows and pretty much any 4x4 in the state of Iowa. That term really sucks, though - you need to do better as it's becoming akin to certain other slurs.

Huh?

In any case it may soon be a moot point, since malls are going the way of the Dodo bird. Supposedly.

I think the Harley comparison is right on the mark. A lot of harleys are modified. Some as bar hopping weekend toys to impress the friends at bike night & be part of the Harley culture and others with specific performance modification to make them better bikes, that are ridden accordingly.

Whatever floats your boat.

Well, some of the older ones, yeah. Southridge in Des Moines - if Target hadn't moved in, it would be dead. Same for MHM - not much there any more. Old Navy but I refuse to shop there.
