Upgrading radio to 8.4 from 7.0

Might try to look for an 8.4 to upgrade my 7.0. Are the only things I need the radio,bezel and code? I hear that I won’t be able to update the software if it didn’t come with my vin from the factory? Is that a big deal? I don’t see them adding any features at this point, maybe squashing bugs? Looks like I can get decent cash for the 7.0 setup. Any thoughts? Thanks!
