Just upgraded from 7” to 8.4 radio and was surprised.

Hey all, I just upgraded my radio to the 8.4 from the 7 inch and was surprised at the sound quality difference. I have the non-alpine system but I upgraded my speakers a while back to the Kenwood‘s that everybody uses. I made sure I put the equalizer settings at the same as my previous but I’m noticing the sound quality is more full. It sounds cleaner, highs and lows. (I have a JL audio sub) I originally thought it was placebo but even my wife noticed it. The amp obviously is the same so I’m not sure why, anyone else notice this when they upgraded? I know it has hd radio but I’m talking about car play and Xm radio. Pleasant surprise I guess.

Reviving this thread, as I'm having the opposite! I just installed the 8.4" to replace the 7" on my 2023 Sport w/out the Alpine system. After 1 sleep cycle - everything seems to be working, but the sound quality is noticeably worse. It's light and tinny, and increasing the bass just makes it sound boomy and muddy; not richer. It's so bad that I'm actually debating going back to the 7" screen!

I notice you have an aftermarket JL Audio sub. My Gladiator does NOT have the factory Alpine sub, so I'm wondering if the 8.4" really is configured to "assume" a sub is present?

I'm really hoping that a couple more sleep cycles will resolve this, but I'm not hopeful... Or if anyone here has any suggestions or tips, I'm all ears!

where do you source one of these 8.4 units other than ebay? FB maybe. the ebay people are crazy with their prices

I got mine from the marketplace here on the forums. You can post in the WTB section and see if you get any bites. Do agree lot of people ask way too much for them.

i had 2 different dodge chargers. updated both screens from 4.3 to 8.4. I know at that time I could use radio from chrysler or dodge. I dont know whats compatible with the Gladiator.

in the charger, the info on the charger was stored. so I could install a chrysler radio that would at first have wrong screen but would correct itslef when cycled on off and change the screen to Charger after 1 or 2 times

is it similar for the Jeep?
