I went with factory steel wheels and painted them to match the Gator color. I mounted Kenda Klever 35x10.5x17. Just got back from a 5100 mile trip from Dallas to Tillamook, OR, and back. These tires did great in the rain and are very quiet on the highway. The steel wheel is 2 lbs heavier than the factory Rubicon wheels.

I wanted to do the same... but the steelies were on national backorder every time I checked, finally conceded and purchased something available...... might be a good case for a future buy when stock catches up with demand... maybe serious mud tires for wheeling days, so not to demolish the mall crawler wheels... ha ha

Why would you not want to go off-road with wheels with “big lips”. I understand not putting them on an extreme rock crawler but that’s not what this build is for. These will perform just fine for 99% of jeepers needs. But I would like to know why you wouldn’t go off-road with this setup?

For me I don't like that you can't really air them down much and they ride too rough. They stick out so far wouldn't get through some places, and the rest of the guys I jeep with would laugh me off the mountain.

?complaining about rough ride? Worried about someone laughing at you?
It is interesting to hear some of these reasons. If I was going up a mountain with you, I have a feeling I would do just fine. If I was going up a mountain in a Mojave… which has wider axles than my rubicon…. I would use another set of wheels and tires. I guess everyone is assuming we all have one set and we have to buy and drive that set on the road and off-road. At one point I had 13 tires and 2 sets of wheels in the garage. I think the lesson would be before calling someone’s Jeep a bro jeep or whatever, understand not everyone is driving on the only wheels they have. But in all honesty I think even in “bro mode” my Jeep will hang.
These wheels were on the Jeep when I bought it… with 40s, stock gears, 3.5 springs and no control arms… straight mall crawlin! I am not a huge fan of 20s but these look pretty good so I kept them. This spring the plan is to buy another set of 17s, upgrade axle components and truss so I will go back to the 40s. Slowly planting the seed in wifeys ear every once in a while so she is not completely caught off guard lol.

my bad. Off on my rock crawling Mojave facts. But man I hope that difference in wheel offset doesn’t keep people out off places. ?
